How about a dumb question for a change

Post by BrokenPlay »

This is my first GM vehicle in a long time. All my others I have done oil changes on.

I go do one on my H2 and I have some cross hatch pattern on the stick, that makes no sense to me. Lordco says I need 7.8 liters of oil......on a 6 liter engine?....They are either smoking something, or I need to.  <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

So I call upon the masses who know more than me in most cases....how do I read the dipstick pattern and how much oil does this thing take?

Thanks.    <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Ok the only ones that can give you a definite answer on how much oil your H2 takes is a dealer or other mechanic ( they use the dip stick on an oil change.) have them show you how and when to check. Also check the level shortly after a change a loose or miss threaded oil filter can drop oil levels and destroy your engine.

The 6 litre rating is engine displacement ( the volume displaced by the pistons from bottom to top of the stroke ) even this can be changed by boring out the  cylinders and putting in bigger pistons. or lengthening or shortening the stroke ( changing the crankshaft) done to increase power ( why Nascar engines can blow in under 500 miles in part their mostly over bored for power).

The oil capacity is determined by the size* and shape of the oil pan and what's in it Oil  coolers and other things even a change of oil filter can need more or less oil. For instance Kevin's motorcycle had a 750 cc displacement ( the volume of a 26 oz bottle) but took almost 3.5 litres of oil ( over 5 times its displacement). Remember oil lubricates, cools, and removes debrie from the engine. that is why some people put larger pans on high demand engines. Also in almost all oil pans or wells magnets are placed to collect metal fragments occassionally dumping the pans allows these to be checked and can save money by indicating excesive wear of bearings etc.

* On an  Hummer even a bad dent can lower your oil capacity . Also that bottle of oil may not be a Litre some are 950 ml or less.
