Taxing issue

Post by SELWA »

Not sure where to post this so I though I'd try out here. 2 years ago I bought a H1 through a company and they imported it for me. This year I sold it. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> Now the company calls and e-mails me up saying they need proof that I paid the PST on it!! ($2600!!). I shread documents after 1 year and all the e-mails with this company where on my work PC. I was laid off 1 year ago so I have no records at all. They are saying that Revenue Canada is after them for the proof and if I can't help before month end I will be billed this amount by them (the company)!

How can a company bill you tax 2 years after the sale??? She also said if it wasn't paid I wouldn't be able to plate it. Well I had it plated and the new owner also had it plated. Any advice or comments??

If you had it plated them the MTO will have record of it being plated and should have record of the tax being paid (can't plate it unless the PST is paid...right).  Try getting record of the vehicle being registered and plated in your name from the MTO and send this off to them.  When I imported mine, I had to show the tax receipt from the GST and had to pay the PST right there at the vehicle registration office.

Well I have a copy of the ownership when it was in our names with my personalized plates on it. Now the next owner has plates on it as well. Just can't see how they can come back 2 years later asking this now.

I personally don't think that this IS your problem!!....  I would write them with the copy of the ownership and the personal plates (picture on the truck would help) and tell them that it would not have been plated had the government not received their money.  Leave it at that.  They can bill you if they want, but you need not pay!!  If they bill you, pay your lawyer the $100.00 to write them a letter once again explaining your side and insisting that any further contact should go through your lawyer and that you are not going to pay for their failure in bookkeeping!!
