Depends on what your doing a short pull to move H3 to a towable position used strap over hitch ball max about 5 ft

If a longer pull then shackle to the tow point .

Good point is to have a tow bag or backpack ours contains straps shackles of various types , the controls cables and plugs for winch (spare batteries for said control) and 100' of climbing rope ( saves dragging wire rope through mud or as a throw line to truck in deep doo doo. oh yes as a clothes line for the terminally soaked). This keeps things organized and when used items are carried outside bag when home their cleaned, inspected, and either replaced or repacked dry ready for the next outing.

How about if I was to use the H3 to pull a car out of a ditch in the snow. Should I still use use the recovery loop on the H3 bumper or use the hitch?

The Loop works perfectly fine....

I've had my ass halled out of a ditch with the front loops..... they are designed to take the weight.

On Hummers use recovery points when possible tow hitch is usable only to tow disabled vehicle on flat a very short distance. Warning when towing car or other non tow point supplied vehicle use frame attachment or trailer hitch. Not bumper or axle  see snow tow video on this site. second entry in new members / winching safety . Hint if something starts to break STOP and reconsider.  A tow truck is cheaper than a new rear on car.

So here's my setup right now. Which method would work better? 1st uses a hitch ball to connect the strap and the 2nd pic I can use a hitch pin to hold the recovery strap INSIDE the hitch itself.

Or should I get another shackle and use one on both ends of the recovery strap?

I'd put the ball away . But use the ball receiver with a shackle.

Well I think I'm set pretty good now. I have 2pcs - 3/4" and 1pc - 7/8" shackles,  4" tree shaver, 2"x30ft recovery strap and a receiver shackle. Duncan from Titan Off Road has some nice gear and he's in Burlington!
