Hey everyone
Ive owned a 2003 H2 for the last few years and im really getting serious on looking in to getting a H1.As much as i do love my H2 i think i might be better off, off roading in a H1.
I was basically just wondering what are some of the issues you guys deal with?
And as far as comfort/traveling long distances to maintenance and even aftermarket parts?
Im debating on a 8"lift and lots of goodies on the H2 or see if i can get in to a H1
I NEED HELP!!!!!
thanks
Brian

Re: Wanted H1
I can only speak for what I did to mine and the list isn't even done yet. They are a nightmare if the previous owner hasn't taken care of it really go look at the vehicle look for leaks in the steering grab the halfshaft check to see if the move if they do they are about 500 a peice. Ask for maintenace records if they don't have any ask what has been done to it. Check the suspension they will drive on springs that are missing peices to them. Shocks brakes the RR caliper has a tendancy to stick on mine U-joints steering linkages. If you want A/C buy a 97 and on they have the upgraded HAVAC system dual tanks were availiable in 96 and on handy if ur fuel gauge doesn't work. These truck are mechanical nightmares if not taken care of routine maintenance really does take care of them. Travelling with the truck is very nice a good captains chair the diesel is loud but you get used to it. They are a great truck if you get all the bugs out of them. BTW you mentioned to want to offroad with it get a 96 to 98 the torque bias diffs were perfect inbetween these year for offroading. Don't buy the first one you find make sure it is a good truck before you go and buy it I trusted a buddy and I wound up with a 20000 bill from fixing it. But if I had to do it again I would still own one I would take more time in looking for it.

Re: Wanted H1
I recently purchased a used Hummer and so far just to get it saftied I have had to Replace all the lower ball joints, replace one upper ball joint, replace the rear shocks, repair the backup lights, rebuild the rear calipers, add daytime running headlights, fix the electronic windows, repair the licence plate light, and change a few fuses. This might sound scary to some, but it was somewhat expected because it was a 95 H1 (of course, some were unexpected!!). With all this said, it is handy if you are able to do work on the truck yourself when it comes to Hummers (in my opinion, in my short experience), due to the high labour and parts costs as well as finding a suitable mechanic that will work on it. Also remember that getting the help of members on this message board, and also spending some time on the net to get the best prices on parts will in fact save you big $$$ in the long run!
Also, I find that the H1 and H2 really have a different feeling when you drive them. (once again, this is only in my opinion!) The H1 is very noisy, feels very wide, only fit 4 adults, and you really feel the bumps differently on the road than in a regular SUV. All that said, I do love the feeling of driving my H1, the turning radius is amazing, and the overall feeling you get when you drive it compares to nothing else I have ever driven, it is like a sports car on steroids (ha ha, lots of steroids). It did take me a while to get used to driving it, but now I prefer it over all my other vehicles (well, depends on if I have a need for speed! ha ha)
Anyways, if you have never tried the H1 before and are ever near the Brantford area I would love to take you out for a drive. I would say just going out and trying the H1 is probably the best place to start! I also totally agree about checking over the truck with a fine tooth comb, and even bring a friend along if you can (who is somewhat vehicle savy), this will save you from a huge headache down the road!!
If you ever have any other questions let me know!!!!!!

Re: Wanted H1
How is the fuel consumption compared to the H2?
Besides what sounds to me a little bit stiffer suspension does it handle quite well for city driving? Giving the fact its so wide
I would defiantly like to meet up with a H1 owner and take a better look.
Is there anything else you guys can recommend i look at in a buying a used H1?
Thanks to everyone you guys are a great help.

Re: Wanted H1
Figure out what you want in it do you want dual fuel tanks gas or deisel engine doo you want TT4 or BTM btw TT4 (not recommended for offroad use) Duramaxx or Optimaxx diesels military or civilan and interior cloth or leather everything comes into play I use this as reference guide to all Hummer years has some good tech info as to model changes

Good idea
Ill ask Harold Spies. He lives in Alberta and usally perticipates in Events in the area.
I would abolutly use it for mostly offroad. And desile would be perfered.100% has to be a 4dr hard top.dual tank.. from the link you sent ive really be looking at the 01-02 how were these years for offroad? can someone tell me more about torson diffs?

Re: Wanted H1
Hey Brian, not sure if this applies 100% to the H1 world or not but I learned a few things about the Torsen diffs from the Stang. Basically they're a mechanical type limited slip, on one end of the spectrum you've got a dedicated locked diff, on the other side an open diff, and then in the middle the limited slip torsen.
Since it's a mechanical diff there are no sensors or computers, so they react to a slipping tire more or less instantly. They're definitely not as effective as a locker but you do get that transfer of torque from the slipping wheel to the wheel with traction. How much torque you can get to one side or the other is going to depend on the diff, but it'll get you moving.
Again, this may not apply to the H1 diffs, but many of the torsen type diffs also use consumable clutch packs which means that the diff needs to be rebuilt every now and again. How fast just depends on how you drive it, but if you're spinning the tires you're using the clutch packs. When the clutch pack finally wears out you've got an open diff with no limited slip capability. In the Stangs everyone is upgrading to carbon fibre packs because the factory ones wear out so quick, and the one wheeler peeler is just embarassing...
That's all I know!
I was just watching Youtube when I spotted this... dunno what kind of lift is on this H2 but it looks good... http://www.youtube.com/user/SMASHyouWITHmyWALLET#p/u Might change your mind on the H1...?!

I don't know much but what I do is in 99 they went to Torsen 2 diffs there are no clutch packs in any H1 diffs these diffs they are a bunch of worm gears and screw gears. They do not work without the use of BTM in pre 99 truck in 99 they added TT4 witch is a abs system that senced slip applied the brakes to that wheel and got the torsen to lock up enough to get you moving emilminating driver input smart drivers would want btw over TT4 unless ur going to put in a locker right away then go with a 2002 and up because at that point it really doesn't matter anymore
Read this artical it will help you decide what is best for you
