Cue up Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road" because the Pentagon announced they're going to stop buying Humvees after this year. A quick look at two of the vehicles set to replace the venerable truck below.
We all knew the military Hummer was on the way out, but not necessarily so soon. According to Lt. Gen. Edgar Stanton, fewer losses and the introduction of new vehicles cut down on the number of new vehicles needed so they're only buying 8,000 this year and then non planned for the future. Also, they've got two good alternatives more suited to the type of warfare.
The first is the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or, JLTV. Multiple prototypes have been developed, including the one above by BAE Systems, which is a finalist in the joint Humvee military replacement program. These vehicles use a v-shaped hull for mine protection and all have more armor than a basic Humvee so they don't need to be up-armored.
The second, and our favorite, is the M-ATV, the smaller version of the MRAP designed for climbing over even rougher terrain found in places like Afghanistan. With a fully independent suspension, turbocharged V8 diesel, and a powered turret we wouldn't screw with it.

The "next generation" AM General product is the GTV listed in one of the videos.
http://www.generaltacticalvehicles.com/
If GTV/AM General wins the contract then it's likely it may be built in the H1/HMMWV plant in South Bend or a new facility. It's pretty neat, it does look like it uses geared hubs so it would be interesting to see if there is parts cross over with the H1/HMMWV.
