The gas engine H1's aren't too bad, unfortunately most of them don't have the aux tank, and average 8-12 mpg at best with a light foot. So your range on a tank is going to be around 200 miles or so.
The Gas engine is super common, it's a chevy small block, anyone can work on it, some gas specific parts hummer may be hard to find, but I know a few gas owners who stand by them, they're much more quiet than the 6.2/6.5 trucks.
If it's in good shape and has been maintained I think it's a good deal.
That's a big if though, as the saying goes, there's no such thing as a cheap H1, it probably needs a few thousand dollars worth of work.
That being said, I saw a factory 8.1L Gas H1 [one of the Vortec 8100 trucks that AM General was thinking about releasing back when the H2 came out] and that thing is faster than the 6.5 Turbo. Lots of power.
But yeah, given the choice, I'd take a 6.5 NA over a gasser, unless the gas truck has the rare supercharger kit.

Gas trucks are rare in some respects but dont plan on a return on your investment for some time.
Easy and cheap to work on for engine parts.
Horrible milage in any economy.
It will overheat off road.
Not really sought after.
Myself personally i would say no. It just isnt the same thing. I would go with the 6.5 turbo diesel 1996-1998 even with the #8 problem. You can get some cheap trucks of that vintage cause everyone is scared of buying a truck and blowing a potentialy blowable motor.
If the motor blows at some point you can replace it with a newer 6.5 for 12k including good labor.
Guys who drive these trucks blow motors from time to time. Its part of the deal no matter what year. You will be replacing lots of parts anyway so you will have to get used to it.
I would look at the 5 year plan and spend 25k to bring any truck up to snuff and then start to take care of her properly and you will have a good truck over time. Its getting harder to find any good deals on a H1 in good working condition so if you really want an H1 its worth looking at some of the bad deals and screwed up trucks and making a play. In a few years you wont have the chance.
A lot of us paid big money for our trucks (100k plus) like i did. A lot of us also kicked the livin s--t out of our trucks over the course of 10-14 years and are willing to sell them to you for 25k. I think thats a good deal if you can get a good working truck for 50k long term and only if you are mechanicaly inclined.
