Air suspension and exhaust

Post by BrokenPlay »

My H2 has the rear air suspension, and I have been looking around at exhaust systems. Lately it has been the Magnaflow kits, and probably putting it in myself.

Has anyone done it before to know it it will fit?

I have high flow after market cats and a magnaflow mufler - system is much louder but much better. Fits in like a dream but still has the stock piping. If I had the money - I would have looked into twinning the system but this was expensive as is. E Mortal customs here in Calgary did it for me.

We experimented a bit first.... you definitely need cats or you will go deaf, and stay away from Flomaster muflers as they don't deaden near enough and I find have a cheap tinny sound to them. Magnaflow is the way to go. He ordered just a Mufler that was about $350 just for the part, I have seen replacement systems though for in the 000's so depends on what you want to do. There was nothing wrong with my piping so I didn't see the need to replace the entire system...

Sounds great now and adds a few more horses... not as much as I was hoping but the engine does work a little easier now..

Yeah you should be just fine for fitment with the Magnaflow kit, if you're worried at all just fire off an email to Magnaflow tech support and they'll give you a firm yes or no but it'll fit!!!

I agree about the muffler choice and advice on keeping the cats... Totally a different vehicle but I have the cats cut out of my Mustang and the same Magnaflow mufflers, and holy crap the thing just HOWLS when you step on it. Personally I love the sound but it's not something you'd want to listen to ALL the time since it's quite deafening... I dunno why but cutting the cats REALLY increases the volume of the exhaust, so for a vehicle that is frequently driven the sound would definitely be an irritant and I would definitely recommend keeping the stock cats or going with a high-flow version rather than removing them entirely. Khamul's H2 sounds pretty much perfect, nice deep tone but not too loud, just right in my opinion so he's definitely got an excellent system.

I love the Magnaflows behind a nice V8, they sound terrible on a small motor but on a nice V8 they are PERFECT!!

One quick note on the Magnaflow system though... something I learned about their stainless steel kits that I was not initially impressed with... The mufflers and the exhaust tips are good stainless steel that does not rust and will maintain a nice finish. The piping however is I think what you would call a mild stainless, and it does rust. The rust will never go all the way through and that is warrantied by Magnaflow, but the piping WILL develop a light surface rust which personally I did not anticipate in a stainless steel exhaust.. Just something to be aware of!! Probably a moot point since it's under the vehicle and no one will ever see it, but still.

Cool! Thanks for the feedback!

The exhaust on the H2 is different from what I am used to, formerly a Dodge owner.

I am assuming this....from the exhaust manifolds, the tubes coming down, have bulges in them, which I believe to be the cats.

I was going to replace from them down with the Magnaflow exhaust that had the shotgun style output off the passenger rear end. I didn't want to just go muffler and have a local place do it here, as their pipes only last about 2 years. Figured I would get a kit and do it myself.

Yup - those bulges are the cats which I reccomend replacing as GM cats suck - that was the main reason why I had to redo mine as they were plugged and causing problems. Don't know the brand though that was installed.

Can't go wrong with a magnaflow kit though - probably the best name out there...

As for the pipes - I should have asked where you live..... if you live down east DEFINITELY replace the piping! - out west the pipe should pretty much last a life time, but the salt down east is a killer! 2 years is dead bang....
