Nope it's not actually a 'chip', it's a device that plugs into the OBD2 port under the dash, that you use from the palm of your hand and that can re-write the on board computer! So you'd just plug it in, do yo thang (aka write the new program to the truck), then unplug the programmer and you're done!

Most of these programmers can only load a new program to one vehicle at a time, so I guess when you plug it into the truck it'll read the VIN and thus cannot be used on any other vehicle until you clear the original tune....

I need to revive this thread. I had the same questions as Beattie until I read these posts. However, still left wondering. Are there preprogrammed options in these things, or do you have to understand and know what you are doing and why. I need to reprogram my speedometer because of my bigger tires, but I also want to get better gas mileage and power if possible. I'm just not sure how I would do this with one of these programmers. I don't know anyone around me that has one so I could see it in action so I haven't got any idea...

Can someone here clear it up for me, and others.

Thanks,

Brian

They are pretty easy to figure out ...that being said I don't reprogramme the shift points or fan temp but setting it for bigger tires / gears is easy ...and setting the options for towing or performence is pretty straight forward.
