H3 - Aluminium Shavings In Engine Oil

Post by studiotheater »

<P>I just completed an oil change on my 2006 Hummer H3.  Mileage on the vehicle is 1,187kms and it was the first oil change since new purchase.  When I removed GM's AC-Delco oil filter, I found aluminium shavings, fairly large, caught in the holes of the oil filter.  Some were on the outside of the hole, some where trapped inside the filter.  I don't think this is a good thing but not sure how serious I should take this issue. </P><DIV>Has anyone had this problem? How did you deal with it? </DIV><DIV>Looking for any advice.  Image</DIV>

I would say you shouldn't worry about it, what they are is actually normal during new vehicle break in. Best thing to do actually flush the whole system with new oil and another filter then cut open the filter and see what you find...you could also take an oil sample and have it tested...but I really doubt you need to go to that extreme, unless you have noises to go with the chunks! Remember all new GM blocks are cast in silica sand and sometimes a seam may have a little excess that eventually flakes off.<DIV> </DIV><DIV>Kevin</DIV>

<P>Sorry maybe shavings was not the correct description. The aluminum found was actualy in small coils such as you get when drilling a hole</P>

In that case you should definitely take it to the dealer and have it checked out with an oil sample as well...Aluminum pieces like that ARE NOT NORMAL!!

I agree that you should speak to your dealership regarding this.  While some material in the first couple oil changes is normal, what you are describing sounds odd.  Good on you for changing your oil early the first couple times too!
