For anyone wanting portability as I am looking for Midland makes a nice one hand unit as well. Model 75-822. It gives you walkie talkie capability as a handheld as well as plugging into a CLA and using an external antenna.

I have used this model for years with success.
I slap a magnetic mount antenna right in the middle of my roof, and am good to go.
Trip over, off it comes.
I prefer FRS/GMRS for truck to spotter communication, plus hand signals of course.
For the convoys I have run (up to 35 trucks) I have 4 commercial UHF radios that are in the trucks of the lead, tail, and mid-gunners.

Yeah - you don;t have alot of room there, that's for sure.
I have a fair bit of room on the dash as the whole thing is flat which is nice, I just want to ensure I don;t loose any visibility which is why i think I will wait until I get my radio before I make any final decisions as I'll play with it a bit for positioning.
I would definitely prefer it on the right.
In the picture is the 2 areas I've been toying with - leaning towards the "yellow" as I would like it accessible to the passenger....

Could your unit fit under the nav system in that box i see on the picture,, many cobra unit would fit in there.

I have that same model, been using it for many years,, just need to get antenna tuned for it. Once that is done,, its pretty good for normal use.

I may do both, I'm pretty set on the Magnum as has awesome reviews and you can turn down the power, and a handheld CB for spotting.... makes more sense.
As for under the NAV, not enough room... Even though the Magnum has a smaller box than most, still a bit too big.... besides - that's where I put my sunglasses.. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... rgreen.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
What I think would be the perfect world - Imagine a standard high end base unit mounted in your truck, that is coupled with a smaller hand-held that uses the base unit for transmission. That would be perfect!

Re: Radio Type Discussion
Ok - for those people following this thread, kinda looking for an opinion here...
Is it better to just get a standard CB Radio that has the standard 40 channels operating in the band width 26.9 - 27.4. There are advantages to having a standard CB radio as some even have bluetooth which would be kinda neat.
The radio I have been eyeballing I guess is a HAM radio primarily but also transmits in the CB bandwidth so is basically a CB as well but has the ability to transmit further if the gain is increased as it has the power of the HAM radio...
Seems like a no brainer to me and go with the second one but I don't know anything about these radios and cannot find anyone to give me any proper advice. Finally referred to a shop yesterday but ironically was referred to their most expensive radio in the shop coupled with the most expensive antenna plus I could barely understand them so I didn't get warm fuzzy feelings from them.... Nice but didn't offer any advice...

You should sign up over at CT4WDW, they have a few local HAM radio operators and could probably give you some better advice specifcally around the equipment.
http://forum.ct4wd.com/showthread.php?p=32357#post32357
You will need a HAM operator licience btw if you want to go that route.

Yeah, but I don't plan to transmit on those frequencies and simply use it as a CB - it would be a nice back-up though...

Regardless, if you own a radio capable of transmitting on HAM frequencies you must have a operators license. If you don't have it and they ever check you at a stop (which apparently is common in BC) they can take your radio away from you.

Our Cobra is mounted on right side of the hump face up all controls can be reached from drivers side or passenger as well. Only downside is seat on passenger side cannot go all the way foreward. As for operation by driver in Ontario it is under review with no action till late next year. Also we have installed a knock back which allows antenna to fold back along roof for low hanging areas.

Then I guess the Cobra with the Bluetooth will be the best option then - same one as Gary's I think as not worth the risk....
Just read an article on it - pretty sweet radio!!!
