The other day, we received a fax that asked: "Why does the Red Cross have a Hummer? Aren't those vehicles expensive?"We, too, had seen the Hummer and thought it a bit flashy for a small-town Red Cross, so the other day, when the Red Cross called us on another matter, we asked about the Hummer.
As we expected, the Hummer is available to get to places that can be hard to reach after a tornado, hurricane, snowstorm or flood. Johnston County has its fair share of all of the above.
Even better, this Hummer didn't cost the Red Cross a dime. It was a gift from the General Motors Foundation.
By the way, the Hummer doesn't make its permanent home in Johnston County, which is now under the umbrella of the Triangle Red Cross. It's available to all Triangle Red Cross chapters, so it comes and goes from Smithfield.
We think it's good that Johnston County residents are willing to question how their nonprofits spend their money. We think it's even better when our nonprofits have answers that satisfy rather than enrage.
