- 1Read the first digit of the VIN number to get the manufacturing company country. This should always be the number "1" which represents the United States.
- 2Read the second digit to get the company of the vehicle. For a Hummer, this number should always be "3," which represents AM General Corporation.
- 3Read the third digit to get the vehicle type. This should always be "7," which represents a commercial vehicle.
- 4Read the fourth digit to get the engine type. For Hummers, "D" represents a 5.7-liter gas engine, "L" represents a 5.7-liter leaded gas engine, "W" represents a 350-cubic-inch gas engine, "X" represents a 6.2-liter diesel engine, "Y" represents a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated diesel engine, "Z" represents a 6.5-liter turbo-charged diesel engine and "F" represents a 6.5-liter turbo-charged diesel engine with CAT ECM.
- 5Read the fifth digit to get the transmission information. For Hummers, "A" represents a four-speed automatic transmission while "E" represents the three-speed automatic transmission.
- 6Read the sixth and seventh digits to get the truck model. For this "82" represents the two-door truck, "83" the four-door truck, "84" the station wagon truck, "85" the open body truck, "86" the two-door industrial, "87" the two-door recruit, "88" the open body recruit, "89" the two-door cab and "90" the open-body truck with full hard doors.
- 7Read the eighth digit to get the gross vehicle weight rating. For Hummers, this should be the number "3," which represents the 10,001 to 14,000 pound range.
- 8Read the ninth digit for the check digit. This digit may be any number or the letter "X." The check digit is used by the manufacturer to verify that no other vehicle has had the same VIN within the past 30 years.
- 9Read the 10th digit to determine the year of the vehicle. The letter "N" represents 1992, "P" represents 1993, "R" represents 1994, "S" represents 1995, "T" represents 1996, "V" represents 1997, "W" represents 1998, "X" represents 1999 and "Y" represents 2000. Starting at the year 2001, the year should be represented by a number. For example, 2001 is represented by the number "1," 2002 is represented by "2," 2003 is the number "3" and so on.
- 10Read the 11th digit to find the plant code. If the Hummer was made in Mishawaka, this digit will be the letter "E." If it was made in Livonia, it will be the letter "U."
- 11Read the remaining eight digits to get the Vehicle Identifier Section number. These numbers are unique to each individual Hummer.
