Re: Noise that worries me!

Post by lasallejai »

Went to Queensway Hummer twice and left the truck there for 3 days in total, and they still say it is normal whining noise. Today they said they had two standard transmission H3's in their shop and their two foremen test drove both of them to compare to mine, and said they pretty much made the same kind of whining noise when decelerating in lower gears at lowerer speeds. I spoke to the machenic who looked after my truck and he said the noise is "commercially acceptable" according to GM. Steve, what should I do? You test drove my truck at your shop and you also heard the whining noise, right. I am pretty darn sure the noise did not exist before. Help!

Hmm.. maybe send a PM to Sugarphreak and see if he's ever noticed the sound since he also has a manual equipped H3 and could provide some good insight. I traded my H3 for a H2 earlier this year and while I still love the H3, the H2 is one fine automobile so don't be afraid to take one for a test drive!! I'd love to get another H3 one day but in the mean time I am super happy with the H2 and don't regret the trade one bit!!

I can't say I ever noticed any noises from my H3's but both of them were automatic transmissions. But I must admit that I have no love or trust in the dealerships when it comes to work. I don't even bother with warranty work any more and have everything done at E-Mortal customs here is Calgary as he used to be a Hummer tech at Shaw GMC before he went out on his own and even he was sick of them.

Going on runs with Sugar though - I have noticed that his truck does make alot of noise on the trail which I do believe is completely normal but he is in low gear when you hear these noises and it does sound like a whining noise, I do not believe it makes any noise in high gear though.

Also all my trucks (2 H3's and now an H2) were US originated and you absolutely MUST convert the H3's and it's dealer discretion on the H2's and some are slimy (Like the one in Calgary) and make you convert the H2 as well. Of course it may have been personal as I called them out on some sloppy work which is why I won't go to them now.

Hey Alex, the noise is not normal, not at all! Tell the morons at the Hummer dealer to read some of the tons cases in the US with the front diff on the H3. The sound you are hearing is the front diff case that is getting ready to destroy itself. I know because one of the guys in Quebec had that and I couldn't figure out what it was. It sounded like so many other things and yet everything I checked was OK. A couple of weeks later we were out scouting a trail and as we were climbing one section his front diff grenaded itself, I mean totally. What had happened was the aluminum case allowed the differntial to flex and crack. The fix install the Alpha cast iron differential case AND what they won't tell you is, YOU NEED TO INSTALL a Rear Locking differential at the very least. Why, the rear locker E-Locker or mechanical True-Trac will prevent rear wheel slippage and help the front wheels to find traction. Better yet install front and rear ARB Air Lockers and you will never have to worry about it again! The guys at Master Mechanic can install this fairly easily and as an added benefit...you will now be able to go many more places without getting stuck than you ever did before! Besides, here is a quick way you can tell if a noise is normal or not...If it wasn't there when the truck was new...THEN IT'S NOT NORMAL!!!

Hope this Helps!

President Polar Bear,

Finally you surface and provide me with some of your professioanl opinions. Welcome back from a long disappearance from this Forum, have you been busy planning and organizing your wedding??? : ) Well, I do not think it is normal either, because I have driven standard transmission cars for 27 years and I should know when something is not right when the transmission makes whining noise like that when decelerating down to around 50km/hour in 3rd and 4th gears. Nevertheless, after bringing my truck in to the dealer for the second time they still insisted it was normal characteristics for the standard H3's, what else can I do? The first dealer I went to the customer service representative said he could not even hear the noise after test driving my truck. The weird thing was Queensway Hummer replaced the sprocket in the transfer case to attempt to rid the noise the first time I brought it in, and before I picked up my truck when it was done I asked them twice if the noise was eliminated and they said yes. Sure enough, when I picked up my truck in the afternoon the noise was still there and I called them first thing next morning to book another appointment for them to look at it again. Now they say it is normal noise made by the transmission according to GM book. Alas! What the heck? Maybe I have to bring my truck to a dealer outside Toronto for them to take a look and give me a second opinion?<img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='???' /> Bumper to bumper warranty is good till December 2012 and they should pay for the repair(correction). I do not know what to do right now, and I am always concerned when I drive my truck out with my family on board. Not a happy camper I am first time owning a GM product, and it may be my last time owning one.: (

I have an idea! Since your truck is a USA truck why not try a dealer just over the border! I have found in my experience that they are more willing to dig a bit deeper to really correct the problems. Why not give that a try! There are several just over the border from you! Btw, can you record the noise, just so that I can confirm it as well!

Thanks

Ignoring my question, but that is okay. Well, I did think about bringing my truck down to Buffalo, but then I do not know how many days they need to get it fixed if they do decide to repair it under warranty. I cannot take indefinite holidays to go down to hope for a miracel you know. In Toronto at least they give me a courtesy car so that I can continue my ordinary life until the call me and tell me the truck is fixed when in fact it is not. If I can take a fortnight off work I would definitely go down to Detroit or Buffalo to have my truck looked at.
