I hope you never have to go through it . It is anoying as heck ! Your lucky also . There is chrome cover rim and cover for the door for the H-2 AVAILABLE . So you dont have to replace the hole part ! H-3 owners are S.O.L !

You should have seen the crap job I did on my previous H2's fuel door before I traded it in! I sanded most of the corrosion off, which as anyone who's seen corroded aluminium, knows how soft it gets and so I had low spots. No worries! I just sprayed it flat black. And because the decorative hex head bolts were breaking off, I just used ugly Robertson head screws because it's all I could get that late at night at Canadian Tire. From a distance... say 100, 200 feet, it looked good, but any closer and it was a toilet. Saw it around town like that for awhile with whoever owned it next, before they went back to the stock setup without the door.

I initially wanted to have the peeling chrome on the Bezel removed . Then painted the color of MY HUMMER . Then leave the cover chrome . Then i was told at a body shop that the paint would not stick well cause it was aluminium . They could not guarantee it ? So the price on a new Bezel on line has dropped to like $130 . So i figure by the time it gets here . It will be around $175 . Then INSTALL . I just changed my rubber , and some fluid changes . I am picking up my Roof Marker Lights . Then the bezel . I still cant believe you cant paint aluminium .

Have had the same problem. I replaced the original then a year later the newer one peeled. Luckly I was able to use the ring from the original with the door of the newer one to make fuel door #3 I attempted to wrap the corroded ones in a 3m real look carbon fiber wrap. does look pretty cool if you sand it well and are good with the wrap.

I think you can powder coat aluminum!!!!

In addition the H1 body excluding the roof is heat treated aluminum and holds paint OK. You would need a good primer though.

In that regard i think aluminum can be painted without issue.
