Getin ready for winter

Hey everyone, i just thought i would start a small thread about gettin our H1's ready for the cold weather ahead. Any pointers or tips please add.



For myself, i just did a grease of all joints and fittings on the truck last week, i love how everything has a grease nipple on it! <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> and i noticed that my battery voltage was a bit low in standby state around 11.5v (would drop to 10.5v when glow plugs kicked in, and a bit sluggish when cranked over), so i replaced the batteries yesterday. (poped on this fancy batt tester my pops has, showed only around 360ca per battery, ).. So shopped around, walmart had a group 78 energizer for $107, my dad got a price for $157 from interstate. Took a spin to costco, they had the 1000cca/800ca for 86$. The costco brand, and energizer are all made by the same company btw Johnson controls i think. the costco had 3 year free replacement, and then pro-rated after that up to 100months. Cant beat that deal. Truck starts awesome now! Im sure no one wants to be stuck in the cold with a dead bat in the morning.



Other then that, i did a temp rating test on the antifreeze, good to go (showed -45).

Oh ya, last week costco had oil pan heaters 1/2 price. So that with the block heater, should make it an easy winter on the engine.

I need some new Batteries... what are the ones from Costco??

The costco batteries were their Kirkland brand i believe, but are made by the same company as the energizers. now the only problem i had with installing them; u would encounter with any of the other brands probably.. the double battery tray has a center holding rod. with the grab handles add a bit of extra width to the batt, and is hard to put in. i looked at the old battery, and someone trimed the handle to fit..



When shopping i also looked at the optimas, but changed my mind about them after reading about all the early failures



oh typo the oil pan heater was at princess auto, not costco.

I just put in new batts as well. Big difference. I screwed up though and got ones with top and side mounts thinking they would work for for some mods i am doing. Wrong!! I ended up having to cut the front post off so i could close my hood and i had to fab a new hold down braket out of plexi glass. All in all it turned out OK and my future mods can still be installed off the top posts of the rear battery.

I modified the side mounts with a bus bar setup to handle all the hook ups and provide me with boosting blocks without opening the hood everytime.

I just changed my fuel filter yesterday, and cleaned the fuel bowl. She seems to run even better now. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... rgreen.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':mrgreen:' />

Did the bearings go on yours? ive read somewhere, someone endedup changing out the bronze shaft bushings to a caged bearing type on the motor, and got it up and running again. just a bit of machining involved, and its much quieter.

Something im intrigued to do if mine ever quit.





Also does anyone happen to have a head cooling kit upgrade installed. Ive been pondering making my own, mainly for the "said" improvement of getting heat sooner in the cab, i was hoping that i would have some ammount of heat by the time i get to work. lol 4 min trip. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... rgreen.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':mrgreen:' />

I fabbed up my own head cooling kit for about $40 in parts and that included the custom made braided stainless lines.



I had the dog house off for a turbo repair so I did it while i was in there.

I just drained the coolant, took off the 2 blanking caps on the rear of each head, drilled and tapped them for 1/8 npt (I think), i was concerned that the blank wasnt thick enough to hold the elbow threaded in so after threading the elbow in and lining it up I JB welded a bulkhead nut to the inside, let it cure for a few days then re-assembled.



So far about 5 to 6000Miles on the truck with no issues and it does get heat in the cab a bit faster.



I used the attached pick as a template for what i made up.

After a bit of searching i found the P/N for the cylinder covers. I wanted to order a spare set and tap and modify those instead of the ones on their now.

They are 14045274 for anyone who is interested. Should run about 12$ ea. Just havent had time to run down to the dealer and order a set up.



Then just run down to Performance Improvements, or the Summit catalogue and get some cool lines.

I just did the cooling kit on my H1 as well. Took a few hours but my heat comes on about 5 min sooner now too. I jt gets to hot up top but by my feet it's freezing.
