SAFETY ADVISORY; truck in park

Post by thedub »

Just an FYI for everyone on something that has happened quite a few times to the point that the manufacturer has been informed.

In this case it is for the F-150 model truck but I guess it could happen to any vehicle.

One of our trucks on another site was parked outside the trailer in “park”, it stayed put for about 3 minutes then started to role by itself. From what I was told it is due to the mud, dirt, etc building up and giving a “false lock” on the park mode in the cab.

With us going through mud, etc. for fun, the same problem could happen. Use your parking brake when stopped especially when off road and shut your engine off if you are leaving the truck. Nobody was hurt but imagine a truck making no noise rolling along…. You wouldn’t hear anything!

Best advice is to make sure you power wash the underside of your truck after all runs, just in case.

The funny side; One of the contractors told us that they are familiar with this because they had reported one of their vans stolen, only to find it the next day in the ditch at the bottom of the road where they were parked <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... oflmao.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rotflmao:' /> It was the same problem as above.

Just because I drive a HUMMER don't mean I don't care about the planet.... in fact it means I can get to most parts without any help!
(try that in your prius)

Parking brakes can fail on any vehicle ( that's why chocks exist for transports). Funniest story I've heard was from my brother who was prepping a 1975 pickup for the showroom ( start of the vehicle year) . He was using no sratch tools on the truck when an Astro 95 tractor unit left the storage line and merrily ran thru the yard of GM Truck centre ( now Humberveiw/Queensway Hummer and next door warehouse property). The large truck a cab over unit struck several trucks including the show room unit before crashing into the paint shop rupturing a paint tank . The trucks air brakes failed due to loss of air pressure and rolled due to lots slope.
