Auto Insurance

Post by Gadgets »

Hello everyone,

I would like to get everyone's feedback regarding their insurance company they use for Automobile Insurance specifically those of you who have had a claim. I have become more and more irritated with State Farm since the beginning of October. And I have not been hearing anything good since that time. Last Friday, I had a Masterguard Vehicle Immobilizer installed in my H2 (I'll go into details in another thread), today we contacted our agent to see if we qualify for a discount on my Hummer insurance, and got a very short email that said "NO". No explanation or reason. My wife has now pushed back, and although we still have not been given a explanation they have discovered we have been over charged for my son's truck he got in August. So our rates will drop in February.... FEBRUARY?!?! WTF! Yet when asked about another expense, we were told she doesn't have access to our billing?? How does he know we are being over charged then??

We are now requesting all our records to see exactly what we are paying for. We pay a lot, because we have 5 vehicles, 3 dirtbikes, a trailer, a small boat and trailer, the house, and jewellery insurance.

History:

I have had my cars insured since 1985 with State Farm. When I got married we moved my wife's car away from Dominion (for reasons mentioned recently in another thread) and then brought the house into the mix. Our agent is pretty good, and generally helpful.

At the early/middle of October a friend of mine who I was travelling with went off the road in his Tacoma pick-up, while towing a trailer with two dirtbikes and an ATV on it. They decided the trailer wasn't covered because it wasn't connected to the truck when the police arrived. Both the truck and trailed rolled down an embankment landing on their sides, the trailer still had the safety chains connected, but had twisted off the ball... AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT! But because it wasn't still connected it wasn't covered and neither were the bikes. Thankfully there was minimal damage to the trailer and the bikes. No one we have talked to since has ever heard of such a rediculous statement. The truck was a write-off and they low balled him big time. Problem was he was in no hurry at all to replace it, so the back and forth began. They eventually caved and gave him what it was actually worth. They also took 13 DAYS to go and see it in the impound yard, so then he was nailed for storage fees for those 13 days for the trailer (because it wasn't covered remember). He did eventually get some of that back because of the records he kept. The guy who towed the vehicle, also owns the storage yard, and a repair shop. He stated he no longer even touches a customers car until he has the State Farm cheque cashed. There have been times they refused to pay... and he is one of State Farms preferred repair shops!! He carried on telling us a few horror stories of customers he has dealt with who had Sate Farm.

I mentioned to him I have State Farm, and just had my roof on the house replaced after the wind storm we had in the spring that tore up our section of town. They were great, actually hounding me to get quotes so they could get it fixed for me. They even paid ME to take down the solar heating system for our pool, because I have coverage for that. This repair guy said home is fine, he doesn't hear much bad about State Farm's home insurance, but their Auto Insurance is another thing. He says it started to go bad 10-12 years ago.

Soooo I'm wondering now, what experiences good and bad any of you have had. This repair guy said Cooperators and Farmer Mutual customers are usually treated very well, and are not generally nickle and dimed to death in his experience.

Pretty much same story here with statefarm. My parents have been with them for like 30 years. And in the past hasnt really given them much problems over anything that has happen. However in the past 10 years their mentality has really started to change. Now that im on my own vehciles, the past 1-1/2 years have been a nightmare with them.

Interesting point I forgot to mention. When I was filling out the information with the Mastergard installer (all installations get registered into a database so it can be tracked back to the installer and owner) and I gave him my insurance information, he said "Hmm, State Farm... I'm so sorry" His story was his premium jumped like $400-$500 in a year for no reason... when he called he got told... "everything is fine with the policy, that was just an adjustment" to which he replied "here is an adjustment for you then.... I am no long a customer" and promptly switched, I think, to Farmers Mutual.
