Has anyone else inspected this H1 for sale in Vancouver?

Post by Indy »

I was going to trade in my Prowler for a 2000 H1 here in Vancouver. The ad states "and this one is perfect!" When I read "perfect", it creates a certain image in my head. Anyways, I went to the dealership to inspect the truck, assuming I will trade it for the Prowler. The exterior has some very long and deep scratches, rust on the rocker panels, doors, roof and rear tail light panels. There is no paint left on parts of the driver's side doors (looks like it was sanded off or something). Front grille has cracks. Bolts are all rusted. Looks even worse under the hood. Horn was broken into pieces under the hood, and there was grime and dirt covering all parts. Windshield wiper was falling off. When I closed the driver's door, the handle came off. Evidence of lots of water in the rear cargo area. Shocks were leaking.

The inspection report was also rather frustrating. Brakes and brake lines have to be replaced. Gear hubs have too much play and need to be rebuilt...and so on - there is A LOT (I have the report at home, so I'll ad this info when I get back from work). The only good thing is that it has a "new" rebuilt engine (I'm assuming the dealership already bought it with a broken engine, for cheap, and figured it could make some money by fixing it up a bit). Car report shows 2 accidents.

Is this what I must expect when buying a "perfect" Hummer H1? They're asking $44k for it. I can get an H1 MUCH cheaper in the US.

Anyways, I guess I'm not going for this one. I'd have to invest $20k just to get it all ship shape again.

But I'll keep looking <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/c-n.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':coffeenose:' />

what dealership was it at??? how set were they on the price?

that much work sounds like it should be mid to low 30's... unfortunately you have to remember its an H1, a regular pickup in the same condition would be less than 10K but because its an H1...

was it this one?

thats been up for sale for over 6 months...

Make them a low offer, give them your number and then walk away... if they really want to get rid of it they will call.

Thats how I got my 2001, and it was in near perfect condition with less than 20000Miles on it in 2003, the wanted $90K, I offered $70 and walked off, got a call a week later and took it for $75K (would never pay that much again, but the company was doing good so...)

Yes, that's the one. According to the car proof, it actually came from Ontario, so some of you might know it.

In addition to the above mentioned flaws, here's some more info.

According to the inspection:

- all hubs must be resealed, gears tightened, backlash adjusted ("all 4 reduction boxes are so loose, they need to be serviced and overhauled)

- all new calipers required

- shocks leaking fluid

- control arms lose: replace upper control arm bushings due to extreme amount of rust, nut/bolt will not torque (possibly stripped)

- camber adjustment on left seized, tie rod sleeves seized

They're pretty stubborn on the price...it's been sitting at that dealership since the beginning of the year (about 10 months).

Is it even worth pursuing this H1? What would be a fair price for this one, considering the condition it's in?

who did that inspection?

Do they actually know anything about H1s???

a lot of people mistake the rocking that they do when you come to a stop as loose hubs or bad halfshafts, but its normal...

it also depends on how much work your willing to do on it yourself, most OEM parts can be gotten for a reasonable price (i.e: front calipers are $30 at Napa)thru various site sponsors and the interwebs.

But if you have to pay for somebody to do the work it is going to get expensive really fast... If you are local (with in Van) I will gladly offer up help if you need it!

Also with a "new" rebuilt engine, what kind of warranty does it have, and who rebuilt it. I am always skeptical of rebuilds unless they come from a company that specializes in that. if its a bad rebuild you could be out >$10K if it fails on you (i would stuff a cummins in it at that point)

I would tell them to keep the blinger wheels and find a set of factory rims, alloy if possible otherwise steelies, but those blinger wheels are HORRIBLE...

Where was that dealer? I should go buy there in my truck and stop and take alook and then low ball them saying it needs way to much work...

Dueck on Marine did the inspection.

I think I'm going to pass on this one. I've got no rush in buying, and I'd rather wait a bit longer and get a good one.

This one "feels" like a money pit.

The engine is a remanufactured unit from "US Engine Production Inc", warranty is one year, but it expires in one month.

Dealership is the used Applewood dealer in Langley. Go take a look at it yourself. I would appreciate your opinion on this one. I did take it for a test drive, but I have no experience with the H1.

money pit isnt such a bad thing if the deal is good enough to start with. I would love to find a mid 90's truck or a HMMWV for 20K or less as a project...

Unfortunately there is a bit of a stigma associated with it being an H1 there for its going to be expensive...

With that list of issues, it seems a bit high.. there will be some corrosion in and on all trucks that have been near snow, salt or anything other then florida...but that is what you get for an older trucks.. as for the rest.. alot if common, but I never seen a door handle just fall off...parts and work are not cheap on a H1, unless you can do it yourself and if you can;t it is best to find a talented and experienced H1 mechanic, these trucks are not like other trucks..remember that and do you truly want to pay for someone to learn on your truck.. I Know I wouldn't...

There arn't many H1s to chose from right now here in BC. Seems like back East there are lot more. Spring/Summer always seems to be better in terms of selection, so I'm hoping I'll find a good example then <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

How much does it usually cost to get the hubs redone? I usually do all the work on my cars myself, but I don't have experience with gears.

Paul, if you do end up looking at the truck, let me know what you think. cheers <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

I went by the place on Saturday but it wasnt there.

I didnt call the guy first though so chances are the owner is out booting around in it until it sells.

It was that the original applewood used car lot right by the princess auto right?

the hubs are relatively easy to rebuild, just requires a bit of care making sure the clearances and shims are correct, but its not as difficult as a differential.

between this site and the HML site and the service manuals its all doable, after all these things were designed to be fixed in combat conditions...

worst case I have a spare set of hubs sitting in storage ;-)

If you do get it, promise you will take off those wheels in the pic thou...
