Quite a few people in Europe are using heating fuel instead of diesel, since both are essentially the same, but I think it also depends on the engine. Some of the modern diesels (common rail...) might require certain additives to make it compatible. It is also illegal to use heating fuel in place of diesel in Europe , not sure about here in NA.

Red deisel, Bunker oil, there are several names for it. It will run fine in most modern deisels but it is unlikely you can pass an emmisions test while running it. Pretty dirty stuff.

it can be done on the red diesel but it is against the law. I dont know the penalty in Canada but in Ireland if they catch you its a 1000 euro fine, impound the vehicle (250 tow + 100 per day + 2 penalty points (4 if you fight it and loose ) + you have to get it tested again after you have flushed the system)

the red diesel is the same as regular just with the die added for farm, forestry, etc. you can run any diesel on bio diesel with very little little tweaking and I have seen trucks and cars back home run on used fryer fat (smells nicer)

every diesel I have had, I dump 1ltr of gas in once every 6-8 weeks with a full tank, it cleans the system and I have never had a problem doing it.

Just because I drive a HUMMER don't mean I don't care about the planet.... in fact it means I can get to most parts without any help!
(try that in your prius)

Here the main difference is farm diesel is taxed differently so fine would be to recover lost taxes as well.
