If they are hated because they are gas guzzlers and not being friendly to the environment, how about other SUV that have similar gas mileage ?
Yes, personally I haven't heard that the range rover, Infiniti qx56, Lexus lx 570, ford expedition, Chevy suburban and Porsche cayenne turbo being vandalized or being targeted personally.
I think that there is even a website dedicated to make people hate the Hummer, if I am not mistaken it is called: www.Fuh2.com
I haven't seen other website dedicated to hate other SUV............
How can we protect the Hummer ( the vehicle that we loved dearly ) from all of those evil vandalized hands ?

Seriously though, SUVs are hated in general, I mean the real SUVs not these wanna be cross over things. Remember several years ago car lots were taking a beating (literally) the brand new SUVs were being spray painted, and smashed up.... but yet they are still on the road.
