Solution for knocking sound when turning the steering

Post by whitehumh2 »

Most H2 owners have heard an odd knocking/crunching sound when turning the steering from time to time. If your H2 was under warranty normally GM replaced the Steering intermediate shaft and the sound was gone...for a couple of months...that is because the part itself was not the problem. The intermediate shaft needs some regular maintenance as well. It is very simple to do.

Step 1. Locate the steering shaft and make sure the center bolt is accessible

Step 2. Remove the center bolt

Step 3. Push the upper part of the shaft up into the firewall separating both halves

Step 4. Pull the shaft down until it stops and then up again...do this several times, in order to disperse the grease along the length of the shaft

Step 5. Reassembled the 2 halves back together again

Step 6. Reinstall the center bolt and secure in place

Step 7. Roadtest and enjoy! Repeat when ever you start to hear the noise return!

Note: Make sure the steering wheel stays centered when you do this. Lock it in place by simply running the seat belt thru the wheel and then securing it to itself. This will garantie that the steering doesn't turn making it hard to reassembled and more importantly it will make sure that your air bag sensor stays in phase and you won't pop the air bag the next time you turn the steering to full lock!

Hope this helps!!

Great tip, I will give this a try!

Should grease be added to the shaft?
