Coloured Diesel

Post by SELWA »

Yesterday I went to put gas in at Husky. The have on pump and the car sat there for over 10 minutes with no one around it. I got fed up and decided to go around to the truck stop area and use the tanks there. I had about $20 in so far and the guy says I shouldn't be using that grade. It's not posted anywhere so I had no idea. He said it's for construction and farm use. ($1.32 instaed of $1.40). I put in about $60, paid and left.

My question is that what's the difference besides the colour? Maybe it's not taxed as much??

The difference has only to do with the color. What you now have in your truck is called Dyed diesel, it is usually red. It has less tax applied than regular diesel. There are inspectors going around and "dipping" the tanks of trucks looking for red diesel. It is not supposed to be used for on road use. If you caught you will get a fine.

I would use up all the fuel before refilling as if you put in any non dyed diesel the new stuff will pick up the color from the dyed stuff and you will still get the fine if caught even wih then tank mainly filled with the correct stuff.

If you are off road only then I guess the dyed stuff is OK.

Thanks Dave.

I just put another $60 in last night of the regular stuff. Not sure how many times a H1 would get stopped to have the fuel checked anyway. Besides my cap is on pretty tight most of the time.  <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... iggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

It's too bad our fuel gauge isn't very accurate.

Just Like Dbot said its dyed red so they can tell if its farm gas or diesel,

I grew up in a farming community and we used to use the stuff all the time, the only time they'd dip our tanks to check for it was if they caught us loitering or doing something stupid but couldnt write us a ticket for it, they would just start looking for stuff like that and handing out VIs.

Otherwise they never checked regular cars and trucks, used to always check the dumptrucks and tractor trailer trucks that werent registered as farm vehicles thought...

I have heard of a suposed problem though using dyed diesel in an H1, I beileve it can occur in 96 and later years that have the electronic injector pump, what happens is the red dye obscurs the red light that is used to trigger the optical sensor in the injector pump which controls the timing of the pump, causes rough running and lose of power, I believe I read this on an old thread at hummer x club forum...

Otherwise you should be fine...
