I strongly recommend keeping your old CB on the dash. It's really the off road standard radio. They're cheap, readily available, easy to set-up and install. Almost every wheeler has one. It's the standard radio.
They suck, but everyone has one. And they're way better than FRS - which I think are marginal best.
Once you've tried a VHF radio you'll love it. BTW, an external antennae makes a huge difference to the range. Hand helds don't have the great range until they're outside your truck. They're OK (way better than FRS or CB) but not as good as a VHF with an external antennae.
I think the ideal set-up is a hard mount inside the truck with a hand held for outside the truck. $'s!

Tried to place an order... was blocked, tried another vendor... blocked again. They are not legal to sell in Canada yet, so nobody will ship them here until probably 2014.
If we want them we have to go to America; Cue the montage music…

When spotting trucks, hand signals are the preferred method. When you use a radio to aid spotting there's always some confusion between left and right. From the spotters perspective a 'right turn' is a 'left turn' from the drivers perspective. With hand signals, when you point it's perfectly clear. Plus the radio ties up one of your spotting hands. This is why radios outside the trucks are not really required - at least they're not the typical set-up.
When people spot with radios they usually use terms like 'right hand down' instead of right or left. This is all easy to say but sometimes, in stressful situations, when inches matter and confusion would cause issues - hand signals are always better.
Having said all that - I can certainly see that there's a benefit.

What about when you are winching around another truck to a tree above a precariously perched truck that might go over a cliff that is supported by an array of highlights and bottle jacks, and the tree starts to go over... I would like to see the hand signal system for that! Lol!

A part of me really wanted to see the incredible chain reaction that would be set off if I had just winched a weeeeee bit further, it would have been like Hummer dominoes!

That was the biggest cluster I've ever been a part of. We did terrible that day.
It all worked out, but I think we were lucky.
