So recently some of our Québec Members (Tony and others) have had the unfortunate experience of getting pulled over for the lack of mud flaps on their Hummers.
The interesting thing is that while it is a law almost all the way across Canada...we rarely ever hear anything about it!
For some reason the Highway Safety Inspectors and the Provincial Police seem to be all over this in Québec!
The sad part is that they happen to be picking on Offroad Vehicles but fail to realize that 90% of Pick-ups and SUVs are illegal in this respect the moment they are built and sold!
Here is a excert of the law copied from one of our Québec Forums;
So a couple of things to note;
1. If you tires stick out past you fenders you can be fined!
2. Mudflaps must be no more than 350mm from the ground when the vehicle is unloaded.
3. ALL Stock Pickup trucks and most SUVs are illegal according to this law if not equipped with mudflaps!
4. Mudflaps must be the width of the tire.
Some things to consider;
1. This is a good law, it does protect the windshield of the car following you from most things that could be kicked up.
2. The mudflaps do not need to be permanently fixed in place...they can be removable.
3. They don't have to be flexible rubber...they can be made of anything!
So since mudflaps would get torn off my H2 when offroad, I made a removable set out of plastic. I made them so that they are at 280mm just to avoid any issues with being close to the limit of 350mm! I made them from 1/4" black plastic. They are one bolt on/off.
I would rather be legal than waste the time of having to deal with the police and to get a ticket!
Btw, ask Tony to tell you his story about this...it is Super Funny!

Here is Some info for Onatrio
<a href="http://www.of4wd.com/pdf/ontario_highwa ... act.pdf</a>
A quick exert;
66.(3) Mudguards Everyone’s favourite, I’ll just give you the exact text on this one:
Every motor vehicle and every trailer shall be equipped with mudguards or fenders or other device adequate to reduce effectively the wheel spray or splash of water from the roadway to the rear thereof, unless adequate protection is afforded by the body of the motor vehicle or trailer or by a trailer drawn by the motor vehicle.
So you could argue that anything that “effectively reduces” the spray should be legal.
66.(4) Exception to 66.(3) (You’ll like this one) You don’t need mud flaps and/or your fenders don’t have to cover your tires if you’re vehicle is “unfinished” and you’re on your way to someplace to finish it.

Very true. I just replaced my engine (again) with some upgrades and in the summer the truck needs a paint job. Plus replace the roof with my spare.

Re: Mud Flap Laws in Quebec
I was done for no mud flaps here in Alberta, as well as wheels sticking out past the arches, I had to put wide arches on my H2 and custom made some mud flaps.
My H2 has a 6" lift and 38's
Section 64, I remember that very well as I went to court about it and they dropped it the first 4 times, the 5th time the cop wrote up a big list of all the laws and it was waiting for me with the magistrate, so I had to fix it, after fitting everything I had to take it to the police station and get the officer that gave me the ticket to inspect it, then back to court and was all dropped.
I was pulled over 5 times in total in just over a year.
3 days after getting the H1, I was pulled over for illegal tint on the front windows, which I peeled off and they dropped the charges again.

Re: Mud Flap Laws in Quebec
wow thats crazy ...I have owned my H2 for over five years now and Ive only been pulled over once in that time and it was for my illegal tint ....funny part was it was a guy with a laser that radioed ahead and the guy ran out and pulled me over and the first thing out of his mouth was "nice truck" ..we spend the next 10 mins talking about what mods i had and then he just passes back my ID and info and said I could go ...I was like no ticket ? he just said no Im not gonna give you one but I had to keep ya long enough so all the other cops thought that I gave ya one ...even as i drove away he said nice truck again ..but they never said nothing about my fendor flares and mudflaps not covering my tires ...knock on wood i dont jinx myself now and I start getting pulled over lol ...funny part is too is that my mudflaps are usually the big joke with my friends because i still have the original mudflaps on and they look ridiculous next to my tires lol

Your mudflaps are definitely do not cover your tires full width!
Man the way yoour tires stick out, you would have the whole fleet of cops following you around here!
Have you ever considered a set of E&G Classics large fender flares??? I have them on mine and they keep me legal and pretty clean too!

Re: Mud Flap Laws in Quebec
ya I want a set of the E & G's but right now Im ripping apart my stock flares and parts of my truck . Like Ive seen a couple of guys down in the states running 40's with the same 6" fabteck lift I have and looks like they dont rip apart their flares. I get some good rubbing now with my 38's. Once I fix the rubbing issue Ill pick up a set of those E&G flares , they look sharp on the H2 ....oh and maybe Ill get some new mudflaps lol . i should probably buy them sooner then later , as Im sure they dont have much stock left .
