Original BF GOODRICH Tires for 2003 H2

Post by collega »

Hello everybody! I have set of original BF Goodrich Tires on original rims for my 2003 H2 that I kept in my garage for about 5-6 years with thread left for 40-30%. All that time I used my Toyo tires on chrome rims, including winter time, that make damage for chrome. Right now I finally, decided to change them back for winter time to original set. My question is: is it safe put use BF Goodrich again after more than 5 years being sitting in my garage without any usage. They right now about 12 years old and I have concern that rubber may be not so good any more.

Any opinions about this?

Thank You.

Imo long as there isn't major cracking your good.

There were times I had Chrome rims in winter time, and all I did was wash rims in the fall time, then wd-40 (liberal amount ,lol almost dripping) every couple to few weeks... Come spring time, soap and water wash me, them few times as takes a bit to get all off ,always worked for me.

Also if I drove threw a car wash I'd respray rims to keep greasy

As long as the tires were stored Inside away from direct sunlight they should be good!

Like Monk said, give them a good inspection and check for cracking near the base of the tread blocks.

As well, if they have held air for the past couple of years...it is normally a good sign that they are still good.

My only concern is that you mentionned that they only have 30-40% tread left...you need to do a quick test, take a quarter and put the caribou nose down in the tread, the tip of the caribou's nose is 4/32 which is the lowest limit of the tire tread for them to be safe.

Hope this helps!

I tried today my tires tread with caribou nose and found out that it's still inside the tread, so I am okay for now. It,s a good advice to check it! Thank You very much! I didn,t check tire pressure, but it looks like that they are still okay. I need to change them for this winter and try to clean chrome rims from salt build up and plague.

there are tread wear marker warning on the tire,

if you reached them, normally your tire are done or good for change as its efficacy is lost.

My Hummer is 2003 so original tires probably are 14- 15 years old right now. I think that it's not safe to use them right now even I didn,t use them for 5 years and keep them in garage. What is Your opinion?

How about you post up some pics???

Your tires are only 11-12years old and like I said earlier, as long as they were stored indoors away from UV light and have a good amount of tread left they should be OK.

HOWEVER, if you are nervous to drive on them...go for peace of mind and buy a new set! Lots of great choices!!!

I will try to post some pics of my original BF Goodrich Tires soon. I think that about 40% of thread left on them and previous owners drove my H2 for about 60.000km on them before new ones(Toyo Open Country) were installed. Since that time( I think it happened in 2006-2007) Old tires never have been used any more.

You can determinate the age of your tire by referring to the DOT stamp on the side wall

In the example above:
DOT U2LL LMLR 5107

 51

Manufactured during the 51st week of the year

07

Manufactured during 2007

Maybe this will help determinate its age

I decided do not keep those original BF GOODRICH tires because they are TOO OLD! They are 12-13 years ols so it's dangerous to drive on them! Friend of mine one day was driving his truck on highway on 10 years old tires with good thread and one of his tires suddenly exploded! He managed to keep his track straight but his experience wasn't good. And it was on summer timer. So it's better do not take a chance and gamble about $1,500( it's price for the new wet of tires).
