differential seals output

Post by Monk »

Now I'm not doing this job, more so curious,

Can one replace the side pinion seals while still in truck, lol pinion looks high up, hehe.

I have a side leak covering brakes, (I have to refill dif bi weekly )

Just so when is done I can give them some good words of advise , the ins/outs I guess,

Any wisdom to spread ? ;). ?

Anything not to touch? , there replacing Callipers/rotors ,so I'd guess most labours there

And yes my paint turn out sweet lol, bright red callipers!! Hehe

yes, they are done in the truck.

after taking the cv shaft, brakes,(calipers are off for you due to replacement)and flange off,
take upper bracket off--2 bolts on diff and 2 up on frame cross member
use some self tapping screws -- put into side of seal, and pry them off.
clean, apply a little sealant to seal, and put them in flush with a tool of same size outer diameter
re install all parts with loctite and torque

side bracket is used to hold seal, bearing and shaft in place
so do not modify for easy removal of seal next time around.

Only thing i would add is soak the bearing seal in Lucas to swell it up, before installing, also makes it easier to press in, and use lots of blue goop on the star seal which should be replaced also.

Hmmm this is about a year and half old, and lol I've been driving around with a little leak since,..

Well, today I figured I had some time , so put some sealer under the output shaft bolt....

Well, to my surprise , that main ( 1-1/8 ) nut, was on sooooo lose, like a 5 year old ,with a toy plastic wrench would have been able to remove it lose..

I took it off and removed my star seal and it looked fine, but there was zero sealant,..

So I added a bunch of "the right stuff" black..all over and tightened it more so to proper (I think 160 lbs) off hand....

But do to laziness , I left E-brake cable and lol I'm sure made extra tight work room for me...

I haven't driven it yet, lol as (I'm sure in my head) but I want it to get very cured..then will test it out...and hope wasn't the output shaft seal they screwed up back then...

Well, lol my leak is back, Roy did say my output shaft had bad Pitts etc , but at that time wasn't in stock,.

With the install was good for a couple weeks, but not sure if the Pitts/ corrosion is cutting up the seals.

Sooooooo, got star washer and output shaft seals from Roy,decided to wait as I seen a killer deal on eBay for output flanges,..

Ended up getting them yesterday , so now, lol have to find a none rain day.

I ended up putting some grease on the inside the output seal, (to avoid any spring break) when beating it in.

This is what arrived yest.
