Rust noob

How to deal with rust? Undercarriage? Is there someplace here in Edmonton you can go to get it cleaned up? My tire rack needs touch up too.

The brush guards and step ups need to be done. Where can you get them powder coated?

Mine was pretty bad when I got mine, I just bought POR-15 and slathered my frame, differentials, skidplates and all that. Best thing about POR-15 is it is SUPPOSED to be applied over rust. So just use a wire brush to get any flaky pieces off and maybe a gritty sandpaper to smooth it out (make sure the rust is still there though, or the POR-15 won't adhere to it as well).



I applied mine about 3 years ago, I did 2 coats, and its still glossy black to this day and looks like a brand new truck!

I don't really have access to a space to put the truck up and work on it. Any places to do it for you or did you just roll underneath and do it with a wire brush to clean it and brush to apply?

Honestly, I just used the jack that came with the truck to lift it up a few inches on either side if i needed, but its pretty easy to roll under there and do it. And yes, just wire brush off all the flaky peices of rust/metal and brush over with POR-15. There is a 3 step process I highly recommend. Step 1 : Use Marine Clean to totally clean the area. Step 2: Use Metal-Ready to neutralize the rust (this allows the POR 15 to adhere better) then after it dries slather the POR15 on. For the love of god don't get any on your skin or it WILL NOT come off.

I chose gloss black, and it looks phenominal. If you want more of a factory finish go with flat.

I get my truck undercoated each year and I use the stuff that creeps - like Fluid Film. The great thing about it is you can get inside the doors, etc. and it just soaks into the metal and creeps around door seams, into nooks and crannies in the frame, etc.
 
For the other stuff (e.g. tire carrier) hit the rust with a wire wheel, prime, and paint - I like to use self etching primer (no sanding required) and Tremclad professional. Depending on the part I will also hit it with bedliner or rocker guard - prime, rocker guard, tremclad.

Ok, find it from previous post, sorry, guys! How good is this POR-15? My Hummer is getting rusty from under carriage, so for me it's very good way to fix this rusty things.
