Well, smoke a bit

Post by Monk »

Ok I filled up truck, and next day at cold start is sounded not quite the same , felt almost chuggish, or minor miss fire, sorta

Next day I cold start and notice waaaay more smoke, grey / bluish , and today at Cold start had chug feeling (it's plugged and starts quick) lots of smoke and smells like diesel,..

When I drive (blueish) puffs out , not really a lot in acceleration , I can sit at a light and nothing shows and I can stomp on it and seems good, just mid driving I'll get a poof and a trail of smoke, then goes away is there anything I can look at before I think anything bad like injection pump

Blue Smoke is normally oil.

Black smoke would be an injector or the injection pump

White smoke would be coolant

Hope this helps you track it down a bit more!

Try some Lucas Engine oil additive...if it clears up the smoke it is either piston rings or valve stem seals!

Sounds like a sluggish injector. Put a quart or two of dextron into fuel and run it.Yes it will smoke more now,but this helps loosen things up. Keep an eye on the smoke and lets see what happens by next fuel fill up.

Ok, since I filled up that night before at a Hokie gas station, I'll change my fuel filter in the am, JUST in case (lol I'm sure it's a bigger issue but figured since I had one kicking around)

Then I'll see if the urban myth is true , add some atf, and drive and see,

If it's injectors (which I think Roy's probably right) I'll wait a bit and get some good injectors (mine are ancient anyways)...and glow plugs while there,..I sure tips job will suck, especially if don't work,,,lol

Ps, I'll Need to make sure my truck can run good as since I'm close to Sunny Keith's, I can get my egg throwing arm ready and peel out quick, haha kidding....... Or am I?

So many possibilities with smoke.
Turbo shaft seal leaking oil to the exhaust= constant blue smoke $$$$$
Failed or plugged turbo= black smoke on excel $$$$
Bad glow plug(s)and or controller= white smoke on startup $$$
Cracked block or head gasket fail to coolant= constant or puffs of white smoke $$$$$$$
Failed vacuum pump= no boost and black smoke with load $$
Failed umbrella seal= puffs of blue smoke when affected cylinder fires $$$
Nailing injector- puffs of white smoke when affected cylinder fires $$$$$
Hole in piston because of nailing injector- white smoke with a clank LOL $$$$$$$$$$$

Good time to sit down and have a smoke!!

Did it happened very shortly after a fill up? Did you get fuel from a reputable station? Or was the station low on diesel? I would add about 500ml of methyl hydrate to a full tank of diesel. This will remove all water in the fuel system if there is any.
