Hello all
I'm trying to learn to do basic (very basic stuff) myself and wanted to know which engine oil type I should use for a oil change on a 96 hummer h1. I'm thinking of using synthetic shell rotella 5w40. Previous oil change was with the regular shell rotella 15w40. Which would be better? I'm assuming synthetic?? Would 2 jugs (10L total be enough)
I already bought the K&N oil filter.

Personally I use regular stuff.....and change more often....
Synthetic is great, some say for colder weather, but I've never noticed any difference, and I have tried both many times....

Also, lol take a pic of your left hand and arm, just before you remove the filter,, then after, hehehe
I swore I was covered the first time I did an oil change, now it's clean and easy, but whew ya I was black

Will do. Maybe I'll bring in my surgical gloves etc to work on the truck.

Those gloves would rock.....nice and tight, and have a couple rags on hand with ya as ,it's an easy job, but the first time one can be more cautious, and oil will fall more,...

Re: hummer h1 6.5L NA diesel oil change
Beautiful day on Sunday. ..so decided to do the oil change and "bond" with my truck.
Went smooth other than the splatter of oil after unscrewing the drain bolt but wasn't terribly bad. It was a straightforward experience that took about an hour as I looked around while I was lying on the creeper under the truck. I used k&n oil filter and shell rotella synthetic oil.
As an aside:
I did notice that the electrical wire plug for the block heater (plug attached to the engine) was chapped and broken (hence wasn't getting any continuity reading from the electrical plug terminals). So I removed the electrical connector from the block heater and there is continuity in the block heater terminals (part attached to the engine). Does that mean my wire was defective and the block heater itself is fine? Can that wire be bought or is it a pkg with the block heater itself

Its not often the block heater itself fails. Its always the wire connector corroding out causing failure.
If you are crafty with a drill and knife you can carve a new rubber insert and use button connectors soldered onto a new plug cord. Its just a figure 8 piece of rubber with two holes in it.
I fixed mine that way 5 years ago and its worked fine since and cost less than 2 bucks,,, or you can buy the whole replacement unit with a new cable. There are also 3 different watt variations the stock one being 600watts and the aftermarket ones up to 1200/1800watts if you like to pay hydro bills. The 600watt is fine and will heat the coolant passages within an hour.

Re: hummer h1 6.5L NA diesel oil change
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm pretty good with working w my hands. I'll try to solder 3 new button clips onto a new wire amd use heat shrink tubing. How would I waterproof the part that connects to the engine. Would silicone be able to seal the plug? Did u mean to carve the rubber and fix the button clips in it? Alternatively, Is there a liquid rubber product I can pour?

Re: hummer h1 6.5L NA diesel oil change
Glad to hear, in time the oil change will go quicker and be less messy, hehe....
I had my plug end break once (110v at 7am, not fun)lol , and I opened the hood and cut off cord and replaced from a piece I bought at crappy tire,
But I think I'm more animal this link would be what your looking for in case it's super bad

I'm sure there's many more. But just saw that.... But I'm sure your should be repairable,..,

Re: hummer h1 6.5L NA diesel oil change
Bought the plug from Napa for 25$ and hooked it up..block heater plug has continuity and I can feel slight warmth from the adaptor attachd to the block when it's plugged into the electrical outlet .
