Steering wheel issue starting

Ever since I've owed my truck I've always ment to grease those, but lol last on my bucket list...

I gotta break down , I'm sure it's an easy job

Thanks for the tip.

Any pics of directions on where that joint is so I can try to lube it myself and see. Any particular grease to use. I have a grease gun and a basic grease.


I'll goto Roy's shop late may to get few minor issues checked out.

I had this happen several years ago.

Ended up being the intermediate steering shaft needs to have the joints greased from time to time.

The one under the dash is hard to get to so nobody ever greases that one!!

You may be getting tired of my clips from the manuals but here is another one. It doesn't actually tell you how to lube the intermediate shaft as I expect the job takes 3 arms and a circus trapeze but here is what it looks like. I need to do mine too...

One is located a few inches from the steering wheel (under the dash). The other is located near the steering gear, under the hood (within about a foot of where the steering shaft passes thru the fire wall). The steering shaft also has a "sliding part" which allows the shaft to change length. This joint is located near the u-joint inside the truck, under the dash. Some, but not all, Hummers have a grease fitting here.

The greasing/access to the intermediate steering shaft wasn't too complicated. It didn't have much grease in the joint...so I lubed up both lube nozzles. I'll drive it a bit and see if it made any difference.


The wires under the dash was a spaghetti mess. Seems like prev owner did some mods and spliced into some wires under there (remote starter install???)

Outta curiosity when your trucks stopped/parked can you easily turn your wheels?

This is more so curiosity as mine been the same forever,.,

But from a stop I feel like it gets harder, then I roll a little and turns always easy,.. But always pressure from a stop..

Sometimes now I wonder if my pumps tired,.

I can easily move the steering while while at park. The issue I had was while driving at slow speeds I noticed the steering wheel felt harder to turn compare to before.

I just had a new steering gear and pump installed 5000Kms ago. Even now mine is hard to turn on asphalt when stopped. I will turn but you have to use a bit of effort. Once rolling even slightly it turns with almost no effort.
Thats on 40" Toyos.
