Replacing ball upper/lower joints

Post by Monk »

I'm guessing but I got 2 moog sets (upper , lowers) from kijiji, about 3-4 years ago, and I always keep staring them down and figure I should put in this summer,

Is it easy to replace? Looks straight forward, but anything I should prep for before the job?

Like are the balljoint wedged in?

When my truck was Safied early this year they said was movement in the rear balljoint , not bad ,but will need replacing this year,..

Uggg so many little things gotta do

I had mine done in the shop so it was easy!!! But one thing I was told is they were not factory and using them was a bad idea as one of my lowers pulled apart by hand it was so worn. The thing was allegedly greased "regularly" by the previous owner. May have been just bad prior maintenance but I went with all factory balljoints.

This is very detailed Monk

I had problems doing my rear uppers on both sides. The joints would not come out.
I had to cut them out and put the whole hub on the bench before i could get them out.
Pickle fork did nothing, double hammer smacks did nothing.
What ended up working was a $50 heavy duty u jaw puller i bought as a last resort.
Still wasn't easy but they finally came out.

It's funny you showed me that picture, I ended up having to also cut my upper ball joint because it just kept on spinning and nothing I could do to make it on spin, so I cut it went to Canadian Tire and got a jaw puller and just tighten it down a bit and then I was able to take off the nut but the problem was though I could not get the ball joint to go up out after as I snagged in the hole to hard....hahaha

Now, for my secret....hehe

As I could not get that half a ball joint out of the hole I put an axe under it and tighten my jaw puller to that and it worked

The axe popped it up, was great
