Well, she decided to (puke on me) coolant that is

Post by Monk »

For a few years , I've had random overflow spills ( 2-3 maybe 4 times a year,) long as I bleed the coolant few time a week she was fine ...

I knew there was a compression leak, but was sooooo minor, and the seal tabs worked great for a while,..

But today going up my usual killer hill, I smelled coolant, and she went to red for the first time ever,

So right away I pulled over,..

Pop the hood and my "overflow catch bottle" was full of coolant (it's just a regular water bottle)

And my overflow tank was empty,,,..

It's was full , literally hours prior as I looked and bleed hour previous.

Thank GAWD I had 2 of the 4L jugs of water in my box ....and super glad it was warm Thursday so my water wasn't frozen fully....

I poured like , 4ish L in there ,and drove home, and now being down hill (as I turned around) I'm sure it helped not to puke more,...

Soon as I got home (as outside temps dropped bad today) I bought concentrate coolant and siphon out the overflow and added 4L coolant and ran for a bit to mix in,.,,, with no load pressure she seems ok, but under a load, she's puking....

Needless to say, not sure what I want/can do yet, debating on a semi low K used motor or would life be simpler with head gaskets?

I worry about digging into the motor ,and and having a wolf episode , (was intresting read, but shitty to for him)

I'm sorta leaning of doing gaskets, and see first what's there, as we dig,.

Lol, ever notice when things go, it's always at crappiest time? Hehe

At least Im gonna need a bit of time to save etc, so gonna ponder a next move,

reason I'm pondering is the motor is tired, I'm sure timing chain may be due soon,,,,but does run good ,

When I get started I'll take lots of pics, errr I mean we , when I book time @ *Roy's shop* hehe

I'm sure either we decide, its not a fast job

Sorry about your luck. Doing the head gasket in the truck may save a lot of extra work. I hear the turbos are hard to get at since they are tucked in the back. I hope you are not getting coolant in the oil or combustion chamber.

Nada in oil (whew) like this am I topped up a bit more coolant and drove to a gas station (cause I'm a weirdo probably)

And my overflow bottle stayed dry, nothing went in it!!

It cycled many times, around 20 mins total time on road. Lots of lights,"where id sweat, hehe"

Seems when under a decent load she wants to spill over, lol and not a little spill either,..I think long as city driving she ok, but lol I don't want to play with fate, hehhe

I guess I don't get how it's a volcano under load and idling /easy driving perfect

I'll have to borrow some of polar bear tools I think, he sent me a pic and said (Monk, don't break them)?

I was looking on kijiji and I came across a used 6.5L turbo diesel motor/tranny in Quebec.
The seller claims that it has 75,000 miles. I know the original early 99 motors have chances of block casting problems (I think its an early 99 motor but not sure)- which may be the reason he is selling it.

Well here is a link of the ad: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-moteurs/laval-rive-nord/moteur-complet-et-transmission-hummer-h1-6-5-diesel/1320360999?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

I did a Kijiji Canada search as well ( lol Canada wide) and saw that "THANK YOU BTW!"

That was my concern as well, was wondering about cracks as the turbo diesel were prone,(96-99)?ish

Dont get me wrong, I'm a N/A motor truck, and have a fantasy to put in a turbo motor and swap in my db2 Injector pump/ then mech wastegate...

But yes, if that motor was grood running, itwould be great to have a backup tranny and transfer case..(for me or who ever was stuck needing as well)

I'm sure My motors at 500-600++ thousand kms speedos been changed once before, and then was high, th PO said,...

I still need time anyways to get financially ready, lol as this either way isn't a small job I'm sure,..,

Like I know my glow plugs are ancient, injectors same time frame probably , so have to keep that in mind as well when I think heads alone,,,,

I guess the only way to know is once we start digging,.,,, but lol that ad, again made my turbo imagination perk up.... :)

Thanks for looking appreciate it, always good to see options

Ps.....i emailed the fellow, so will know how good engine is.. ..a low k motors would be great!! Seems all exhaust from the turbo pipes are there.

If something like that was possible then I would probably get one of those rubber ducky exhaust systems that Roy sells , super flow through..

Price was lowered I see , but he didn't reply to me.... Maybe cause I wrote in English ?

Was basically wanting to know what was the reason they pulled, like if it was running good ..

Well I emailed him again to see...

I doubt he checks his emails often, maybe you should try to text him on the number provided in the ad. Looks like to me, he wants to get rid of it. He wants $1750 for it now, but I am sure he will negotiate a few more hundred dollars. Would be a cool buy if it runs right.

The bad motors were in some 99 H1s. (Mine for instance).

Get the casting numbers off the LH and RH rear of the block just below the deck for the heads.

I and others have threads on here with all the info on how to tell if the engine is a later optimizer casting.

Or just ask Roy...
