Re: Warn Winch Bumper H2
Well I don’t have a winch yet, I need one badly. In and around Ottawa I ride with my buddy who has a Silverado. He plays it very safe where I lead and he follows in my tracks. He has always been able to snatch me out if I need it so far, but because we are worried about getting both vehicles stuck at the same time we have been avoiding anything too sticky. The winch would really come in handy and allow us to be a bit more adventurous.
I really like the idea of an electric receiver mounted winch that could be moved from the front to the back or vehicle to vehicle because it gives you a lot of options, but with it on you loose your approach angle.
So I have decided on a permanently mounted hitch on the front. I think the Warn Bumper is what I am going to go with. I like the price and the look. But then it comes down to choosing the winch.
There was a great article on the old site on electric vs. hydraulic winches that talked about the amount of pulling power required to get a vehicle out. The article was never really finished but very well written, as I remember, and it stopped short of really talking about hydraulic winches.
Since I have decided to go with a permanently mounted winch I am considering a hydraulic one from Mile Marker. I am worried that I am just going to burn out an electric winch by overheating it.
In terms of Winch size I am looking at the HI 12000 or the HI 10500. Since the H2 is approximately 6800 lbs and mine is likely over that with some of my mods and equipment I am worried that a 9500 lbs winch could be undersized if I was stuck well in mud.
So I am going to try the Warn bumper with the Mile Marker Hydraulic winch.
I came across a great article on the Warn site for using winches. I especially like page 18 where it talks about rigging techniques using double and triple lines to act as a pulley system to increase your winching power. Check it out: http://www.warn.com/corporate/images/90 ... eaders.pdf
Cheers, Sean
