well that is great Kevin...and interesting information...maybe there were a lot of very inexperienced offroaders buying very expensive toys back when you worked at the dealership, I also know a lot of offroaders have never heard of snatch blocks or know that they truly can be used to ease the stress on the winch and do shorter pulls instead of 75' pulls..electric winches are never meant to runs for hours non stop.. it is a fact..



anyways if you have anchor points... then this should be fun...and if there is another truck... then there is always a "movable" anchor point..

Good Point! You are very right, most of those guys had no experience, and no one had a snatch block. but for curiosity .. I am gonna see if I can get figures from AM General on how many WARN winches were covered under warranty..

Everyone as a preference as per experience, taste, and mouth to ear recommendation. Its also about what is the usage of the device, and mostly is the device rated for the weight your planing to pull. Ive read, Ive been told, rule of thumb is 1.5time the weight of your vehicle. Ive seen some, some of them have a too small device for their vehicle. Ive read an H3 with a 4500lbs warn on it. Im pretty sure if he get really stuck, it will rip apart and do like the test, broken internal parts, not operational.



The one Im getting is 12000lbs, ok it might be overkill for my 6000lbs truck, Ill probably rip the front of the H before the winch break, but I like the specs the TMax has compare to the Warn. bigger motor, less power drainer, the fastest etc, for the same price, so, so far it suits me.

Its probably the same for everyone, if it suit your need and it suited for the weight it can pull. why not, Engo did well since it was the only one left standing after those test with the TMax for a fraction of the cost. if it break can we get parts for the Engo??? humm never heard of it before reading the article..

i do not know much about winches yet, however i was stunned at the fact that these things crapped out so quick. i would have though any of them should have taken a bit of a beating before breaking. However, it is typical of today's lack of quality, and quality controls in companies.



i do have a winch question though. Why does no one here seem to use a hydraulic winch? I think Phil's?? H1 has one. From what I have read, they don't overheat, and can run more or less forever compared to a electic model. Obviously a little more complicated to install, but they seem like less of a concern reliability wise. Is it a price issue or other reasons?

Yes hydraulics have a major advantage, in every area except 2...cost and you cannot use it if your engine is not running, and difficulty to install.



The one reason that normally stops most of us is that not being able to winch with the engine off, just for that; what if my truck is on it's side = screwed or what if the water is way too deep = screwed.



You are right that the ideal is a hydraulic, but using proper winching techniques with a snatch block you should never be left longing for a hydraulic.

I know at my dealership there was 0 covered under warranty!

This is very true...Hydraulic is nice... for sure.. but.. as Kevin says.. there are disadvantages... which out weights the other?? who knows, again it is preference..

So the ones you repaired or replaced when you worked at the dealership, were they all old and the trucks out of warranty or was it just found that they were abused and therefore not covered??

Hey guys ,what about resale value for your truck? i bet ya WARN adds more $$$ value versus others due to the popularity and branding, its like having a VERSACE purse for your wife - she looks good with it ,AND IT SERVES THE PURPOSE lol
