As Hesh always like to point out, if they want they will take it. However, having been in the security industry for more then 20 years, I have certainly seen enough where a alarm system (talking building alarms here) prevented an all out theft. Maybe a smash and grab, many times less, but certainly not a clean out like without one. Same thing applies to a vehicle in my eyes, the more difficult you can make it, the better chance the vehicle will remain where you left it. Doing nothing at all, is just not wise in my opinion.
That being said, last year I had a Masterguard Immobilizer installed in my H2. You would never find where it is, or how it is inter-connected. They also choose different items to disable. Ignition is always disabled, but after that they can disable several other items, and always a minimum of 3. Add that with Archngel's list above, and I think you will have done what ever you can to help prevent the theft. The Masterguard is also insurance industry approved so I'm hoping that if anything even did happen to my truck, they would be a little easier to deal with. I did a lot of research on alarms before going with Masterguard, but it seems most if not all alarms can be fairly easy to disable by knowledgeable crooks, and GPS have monthly fees which I wasn't sure I wanted to get into, considering thieves know about those to, and where they are most commonly installed. The interesting thing with Masterguard is they are installed only by registered installers, you can't watch them install it, and they prefer installation locations away from a lot of foot traffic so few if any can see work being done. In my case, the guy came to where I work, and I put the truck in our warehouse which has very little traffic to begin with, then I told everyone to keep out of it that day.
I know it sounds like I work for the company or something, but I don't. I was just extremely impressed with their response when I emailed them in the beginning, and very impressed with the installer as well. I don't even know what has been disabled in my truck other then ignition.
If you go with alarm systems or GPS units, try to go with ones you can install yourself, then get VERY creative with the install process to make it unique. In my Monte Carlo, I designed and install my own system, which also took out the ignition, mechanics couldn't even figure out what I had done at the time. It was almost impossible to locate, see, or even figure out how to turn it on and off. It wouldn't work on todays computerized cars though, my car is a 1981, life was easier then.
But, at the end of the day, Hesh is right if they really really want it, they will take it, but I feel pretty confident I have done what I can do to protect my investment.
