So the 92-93, I read a bit on the differences, from what I understand, the biggest difference would be felt in Highway driving?  And very little in off road conditions.

<DIV><DIV>I have one of each</DIV></DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>The difference between a 92/3 and later trucks is substantial. If you just want to drive around town then the earlier truck is OK since the max speed is 55 to 60 MPH, any faster and the engine sounds like it will explode. Any faster than about 20 MPH and every hill you climb you will loose speed even in an unloaded truck. Towing is tough enough in any hummer (alpha is said to be ok for towing) and very bad in the 92/93. </DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>There are only 3 things redeeming about the early trucks. </DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>1. they are very reliable</DIV><DIV>2. they are lighter than the later turcks which makes them better off road</DIV><DIV>3. Pre '95, there was minimal soundproofing, and even from 96-98 (or later), it was only a bit better. You're gonna hear the engine. Personally, that's what I want.  Mine is a '96, non turbo. From 96 to 98, there was a problem with the #8 cylinder cooling in the turbo version. If the problem has been addressed, or the engine series did not fall into the affected ones, you are golden. True, it ain't a speed demon, but we haul our 21' cuddy cabin on a dual axle trailer without even feeling it, unless its up very steep hills. 80- 95 km/h on level ground, no sweat.

So if you want a whisper quiet SUV that is quick off the line and can tow your boat at 120 km/h, this ain't for you. With an H1, getting where you are going is more than half the fun. The time it takes to get there is somewhat irrelevant.

FYI,<DIV>Most of the #8's went at low milage so if you have higher milage truck changes are much less that it will be a problem. My #8 went out at 3000 miles.</DIV><DIV> </DIV>

I have a 97 with an original motor that's pushing 180,000 km.  Runs great!  The truck has never run out of steam off-road, but can be weak on long highway hill climbs.  I didn't do any research before picking up my truck 5 years ago, and ended up spending considerable amount of time and money catching up on the years of poor maintenance.  In many regards I lucked out though, as the truck has a nearly new injection pump, upgraded a/c (you can't get heater cores for the old a/c units... well, not from dealer anyway), and a nearly new transfer case (part of a voluntary recall).<DIV></DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>Robert</DIV><DIV>97 TD wagon</DIV>
