I was thinking they were what I would call spider gears in the diffs. But that I would think would be like 3 small ones and 1 large one per diff?

Nice guess.
If it was a regular diff, there would be 2 spider and 2 side gears all at about a 45' gear cut.
 
 
 
This is a special application for the torson 1 diffs. It is similiar to a old Toyota diff.
 
This diff has 3 side gears and one centre gear per axle shaft. Model year up to including 98.
 
Once the BTM has been used a lot, the gears wear and will give a problem similiar to brake chatter.

I'm assuming that's not metal in the bottom of that diff? If so ouch!!

I've never seen that set up, learn something new everyday

99-01 have torson 2 , Again  , not your standard diff.

Interesting. May need to dive into one soon just to learn.doing a complete front brake job this weekend. May have to open that up and clean up and re lube.
