So the ones you repaired or replaced when you worked at the dealership, were they all old and the trucks out of warranty or was it just found that they were abused and therefore not covered??

[/quote]

These were all new or relatively new trucks with new winches. AM General didn't pay because they asked if the owner had taken any winch training, too which the answer was mostly no. However, 80% of the failures were solenoid related, some where covered others weren't. Motors were never covered since it was considered abuse when the motor melted!! Duh! After the first couple, the dealership had me prepare a winch training class. After the classes we had much fewer winch failures BUT still all related to the solenoids! The newer H1s use the updated solenoid pack that was designed to address this.

Did you find out any numbers from AMG yet?

I was waiting for the hydraulic card to be pulled!

Yes hydraulics have a major advantage, in every area except 2...cost and you cannot use it if your engine is not running, and difficulty to install.

The one reason that normally stops most of us is that not being able to winch with the engine off, just for that; what if my truck is on it's side = screwed or what if the water is way too deep = screwed.

You are right that the ideal is a hydraulic, but using proper winching techniques with a snatch block you should never be left longing for a hydraulic.

Thanks Kevin, I didn't even think about the engine not running. I knew there had to be a good reason other than cost. Atleast now I know what I have to save for. No deciding left to do. <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... lleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

So this is the response I got back from AM General.. and it is kinda what I expected...

What I had asked was how many WARN Winch issues covered under warranty by AMG or GM ..

"Derek, early on they use to. This was before they went to the new control packs. I could not tell you what percentage failed but it was low. The other problems we had were customer not knowing how to use the winch properly and damaging them. Now that was an issue for a short time."

So does that mean you are planning on getting a new winch?

I did a huge amount of research before I commited to any one winch, in the end I went with a T-Max 12K winch. Waterproof, reliable and a soild unit all around.

Although I had an issue with a power terminal coming out when I first went to use it, that is resolved now and it works like a charm.
