I have a set of 42 inch swampers for my 96. I can put them on unmodified, and only get a very slight rub when reversing. But they are swampers....loud and not the nicest ride. Off road they are awesome. And they look killer.

<DIV>I think 38" swampers (ie close to 39" real diameter) are the largest you can safely use off road without rubbing issues in the front under full suspension compression. The rear has lots of room. The easiest mod for larger ties is a body lift.(the alpha has a factory installed lift to accomodate the different engine) but even with a 2" lift 42" is pushing it to the limit.</DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>FYI: Be carefull with some of the Interco super swampers, there have been many reports of tire failure of the 38" size during highway use. I had been using them but was always nervous when using them on the hiway (which I did very little of). The US army put out a similar warning regarding the interco super swamper failures.</DIV><DIV></DIV><DIV></DIV><DIV></DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV>As far as the quality issue goes, do not confuse quality with fit and finish. The trucks are built under a stringent QA program as they are built to military QA standards. What is not so good on the H1's is the fit and finish. Being a low production run vehicle, they did not have the luxury of a really nice interior, instead, simple and cost effective materials where used, and you certainly can see the end result. The 2004 and alpha is a different story once GM got involved but this impacted the cost significantly and did not yeild an increase in durability (and probably reduced it a far as the wearability of the interior goes). </DIV><DIV>Low production sports cars are an entirely different catagory as part of the expecation is a hand built (hand carved and polished wood for example), perfect finish, You also pay for that attention to detail of finish.</DIV><DIV> </DIV><DIV></DIV><DIV></DIV>

Keep in mind that there is a difference between body lift and suspension lift. In either case, you are going to change the centre of gravity of the vehicle, and thus change its performance characteristics. I'll follow the advice of Phil..."why bother?".

Hi rick , no never owned a viper ...nice car though..just ferraris...old english bikes i would imagine could also be a love hate relationship , I use my hummer a lot more then the testarossa ! as i mentioned in my previous posting thinking of installing a lift [2 inch ?] to accommodate 40 inch tires the existing ones are wore out , so now would be the ideal if i was going to do it.must admit i am tad bit confused after reading some of the other members experiences and opinions ..body lift, suspension lift ect....I have farm in the okanagan and use my pick up daily on the ranch love it regardless of its quirks ....regards alan 96 2 door
