John,
I am very interested to see how this winch works out. I want a winch on my Hummer, but I don't like hearing about the $1700 price tag and then having the thing "burn out" due to use....however appropriate it may have been....with NO warranty because some idiot says it was misused to pull out a truck (wasn't that what it was built for???)

Patrick,
Since you are only going to be using your winch occasionally, you could consider the Champion 10000lbs winch kit from Costco...while not the best, it is better than nothing and it won't blow the budget!!
http://www.cpeauto.com/C10586.php
And you even get everything included with the winch in the box!!! It is a cost effective alternative for occasional usage and beside to make it stronger and too make it last longer, buy an ARB Snatch block from Tony and you should be good for a long, long, long time!!!
Kev
PS: Tony and I are looking into that 17,500lbs Recon Winch!!! But that is because we are Trail Leader and Trail Caboose!!!

I personally like Warn especially the ones that came on the H1.
I was looking into an Hydro MM but after some research decided to just rebuild my Warn.
After talking with someone on HML it came to my attention that MM doesnt hold up in the salt belt like warn does.
Also some instances(hydro lock or otherwise) a hydro mile marker will be useless but the warn can keep trucking... I would rather have a winch that needs to cool every so often than one that wont even work.
That is just my opinion on things <img src='

I voted Mile Marker. It's all I've ever owned even on my side by side and car trailer. Off the top of my head I've owned 5 Mile markers. I can say they never let me down. I've only ever owned the cheaper models and they were all electric. Many people I go wheeling with either got Mile marker or WARN and I've never seen either of them have a problem. I have no reason for buying the Mile Markers other than it's what I started with. I'm also loyal to them because my little MM PE8000 on my H3 got me out of a dangerous extremely sticky situation and it saved my ass and my H3 from rolling over.
The only winch I've ever heard anyone complaining about is smitty built. And I've never heard anyone say anything negative about any hydraulic winch. But that goes back to my thinking about tires. Your not going to find too many people that drop 1500$ on a set of tires (or winch) say that they are not very good.

On one particularly nasty scouting trip with five H1's, 4 had winches.
At the end of the day, 2 Warns either weren't working, or would work for a short time and have to cool.
The other Warn was fine, but it was my MileMarker that did the heavy work.
Pull all day without a wimper.
As for the poster that said "Also some instances(hydro lock or otherwise) a hydro mile marker will be useless but the warn can keep trucking... I would rather have a winch that needs to cool every so often than one that wont even work. "
I don't buy the logic.
The instances of Warn winches overheating far surpass any MileMarker failures.
Ask the U.S. Military.

I totally agree that on most circum stances the fact that warn overheats definitely is a PITA, but same time I have been in a situation where I needed to be winched out without engine power due to water levels.
Also on some inclines if your running low on fuel you can stall the truck and thus have no engine power until on level ground and fuel system bleeded which I have also done(although at the time I didnt need a winch I was just doing it for a picture shot.).
So yes on majority of instances where a winch is needed the Milemarker is superior in the fact it is lighter and has less to go wrong and does not over heat.
But same time there are the instances that are rare but do happen especially for more wild offroaders(which to be honest the civilian hummer owners are alot more wilder offroad than military) where an electric that does not require engine power to be superior.
At one time I was sold on a milemarker(even though I currently had a warn that worked but now needs a rebuild.) until I get feedback from John Andres about the quality of the milemarker with corrosion. Also the fact that it requires a running engine.
Now I admit I have been idle when it comes to offroading lately but when I did offroad I did some wild stuff and did require a electric winch over the hydro one. Now this is just my own experiences/opinion... Now in a perfect world it would be great to have one that could do both yet not be overly bulky or heavy but we just dont live in one.
There definitely are pros and cons to each and it is a hard decision between the two. I am just the type of guy that would rather have something that sure might need some attention from time to time but will always git r dun... and that is why I am a H1 owner... Sure it may need some halfshafts, ball joints, PMD, etc but with the right attention it will get through just about anything with time <img src='

From the way I understood it, the Milemarker is a great winch (with regards to the H1/HumVee application) however is not designed for the same uses as a Warn. The MM is described (even in small print from MM themselves) as a SELF-RECOVERY winch, and as such, the hydraulic units on H1's wont allow for braking during winching due to the fact that it is plumbed into the power brake system (Im sure someone can correct me with the more technical description). Granted, if being used as a self-recovery winch, in most cases you wouldnt want to be braking as you pull yourself out, but while recovering others, it is essential. That being said, if you are looking to help others out, or as mentioned, might find yourself in need of recovery w/o engine power, the MM Hydraulic may not be the best choice. Either way, no matter what you go with, ensuring regular inspections, proper care and replacement of worn out components/wire/rope will insure the best life possible out of a winch.

The parking brake works fine with the MileMarker when recovering others.
Wheel chocks are a good idea with any winch, but like most others, I never got around to tossing a couple in the truck.
But, whatever works best for you is what you should have.
