Performance Modules, do they work?

Ok you can help checking out the Performance Modules on places like eBay that promise the end to low gas mileage from a simple $25 plug in Performance Module, but do they really make any difference? One I saw on there was talking about why not to by one of the programmers and besides the fact that they talked about they typically cost 10 times more than their performance modules, the programmers overwrite the factory computer specs.
So, opinions. Has anyone ever tried these clip inline performance modules and if so, what sort of performance gains, (or losses) did you experience?

Never tried the mod you describe... but I bought a Hypertech Programmer for $395 and although that was a lot of money to spend on what essentially looks like a cheap piece of hardware, I am very, very happy with it.
I have an automatic and I only re-programmed my SUT for firmer shifting and larger tires and it made a HUGE diference. I get 3.5 more MPG! Not sure on HP but definitely feels like more and definitely does not shift down on the highway anymore! (I used to spend 90% of my drive time in 4th at nything over 115 kmh).
There are many other mod's I could do, like gear ratio adjustments if I had mods there, shift points, high-low rev limits, speed delimiter, and Premium or Regular fuel (I tried this one and switched to Premium and REALLY like the difference...but HATE the cost at the pump now).
The good thing about the Hypertech is you can keep trying different settings until it is exactly how you like it, and you can change it back to factory. That is important if you are taking it in for any warranty work, as these types of changes will often nullify certain warranty types of issues.

I had a custom shop do their own "tune" which I muist admit I am not happy with so don't go that route...
I have heard good things about Predator / Hypertech and I do think they are worth the money in the long run. From what i know - you do not get a drastic change in HP like you do on a diesel tune.... but the other benefits are well worth it as Karl described. Better shift popints, you can re-calibrate your speedometer.... I think you may get another 20 horses +/- which does help!
I have my eye on a Diablo Triminty for when I have the money (My new exhaust killed me...) as not only does it tune, but it also stays plugged in and you can set what it monitors - oil pressure, temperature, mileage etc etc etc...
Nice looking piece of electronics as with Karl - you can constantly tweek it and it also backs up the original setting..
These also void your factory warranty, so be aware of that....
