A couple of you guys have taken out your front diff.  What happened and what should we do to avoid it?

Hey Norm,

The best way to avoid grenading the front diff would be to not go off-road!!! LOL! Actually the best technique of slower is better and when in doubt...winch work the best. Us guys here in Quebec have worked our 2s very hard over some very extreme terrain, but we have learned when to give it gas, brake or when to winch. A front locker would also go a long way to prevent front diff destruction as there will be no more different wheel speeds and everything works together. However if this is not possible make sure you use TC2 as much as possible...I normally tell everyone in the group what to engage and when. TC2 will allow the front tires to paddle their way up and is much kinder to the front diff than the regular Traction Control setting that will stop all wheel speed abruptly and transfer power to the other wheel...normally casuing something to break. Also if your 2 is starting to get over 200000km on it, it may be time to rebuild your diffs before it is too late...espcially if you off-road! Also when was the last time you changed your oil in the diffs...this needs to be done once a year!!!

Hope this helps!

Kev

Thanks Kev.  Just starting to do some off-roading and hoping to make it to a couple events next year.  I want to have a little fun with the H2, but don't want it in the shop if I can avoid it.  It has 160,000km on it, I'm sure the fluids need changing.  I'm still cleaning it from Mudfest.  <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />  :-  <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' />

Was chatting with a Hummer parts guy in North Carolina, you can get a front diff from the dealer. All they( the dealer) need to do is comfirm with AMG that the diff is toast. Then AMG will order one specific to the vehicle from their supplier. This will ,as you know, take a minimum of 5-8 weeks plus shipping. Fastest way if possible is to save the carrier assemble and order all internal parts needed to rebuild the one you have.

That's all the info I got for you H2+3 guys

Hey Roys,

Did this parts guy say anything about what to do if your front diff. breaks for no apparent reason and splits the casing in half and separates about 1.5 inches?<img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='???' />?  That's what Botland did to my H2!!!  I was told there are NO front diff's available in all of North America and ended up with a used one (great deal compared to a new one!!).
