so there i was yanking out the front drive shaft when i finally got the last bolt out of the front diff yoke when drive shaft fell down and the truck started to roll back down the drive way. i had to stop it some how there are always cars driving by and kidz playing around the street so i jammed my leg behind the tire ouch!! sure enough the truck stopped but i was stuck there until the neighbors came over and pushed it off me. I know what everyones thinking and no i m not a dummy i just always thought the rear diff was always locked with the tranny. does anyone know how the power is sent to the wheels in normal conditions ?? is the power sent to the front diff first and then if the front wheels spin the power gets sent to the back <img src='

The transfer case needs to be put in HL. This should lock the differential in the transfer case and then the rear diff will hold the truck.

both diffs are used at all times, the transfer case has a set of gears that allow the front and rear to go at different speeds.Only when put into lock does the front and rear go at the same speed. So , if you loose a cv shaft while driving, you will not go anywhere till you put the t-case into lock-- unless you have front and rear lockers which do not allow each side of the differential to spin at different speeds..
Just as a safety note: Always block a tire.
Hows the foot doing? <img src='

wish i woulda known, the whole point of taking the drive shaft off was to still be able to use the truck while waiting for my new halfshaft ( too noisy to drive with crapped out shaft working ). well now i know, thanks guys

All Hummers are full-time 4x4, that means that power is going to both front and rear wheels at the same time, no matter what. However unless you are in High-Lock or Low Lock the front and rear are not locked together and will spin independent of each other. That way when you are driving down the road the front and rear aren't fighting each other for traction.
Hope this helps,
Kev

okay you learned rule ONE never work on an un blocked vehicle 4x4 2x4 or 2x1 (motorcycle). Always assume the thing can roll fall off the jack ( or Hoist) , or stands. Remember safety takes a moment more hospital takes much longer brother's Auto major class of 20 in 1974 only my brother survives last one was killed in shop when a tow truck slipped off a hoist.
