Buying an H1 from the U.S.

Post by wantanh1 »

Has anyone bought an H1 from the U.S. and brought it back to Ontario?

I want to know if it's worth the effort and how much you saved

Thanks

I beleive Roys has imported an H1.  I have imported two H2's and it was really easy.  I entered the US and drove both of them over the border.  I came across very late in the day and the Customs Officers filled out all of the forms and I paid the taxes.  I did learn one thing though.  The title is required to be at the US customs office at the land border crossing a min. of 72 hours before you can take it out of the country.  However, they do not keep track of the faxed copies of the titles received at the land border crossing office in the US so you MUST get a printout of the fax confirmation when the title is sent to their office.  If you have this fax confirmation, the US customs officers will use this as proof of the title being sent 72 hours prior.  Without it, you can be turned away once you give them the real title and be asked to return in 72 hours to pick up the vehicle!!!

Other than that...pre 1997 vehicle pay a green tax for the air conditioning, you pay the RIV payment, the GST and I think that's it if I remember correctly.

Hope that helps.

Add onto that the PST when you get your plates

Just make sure the vehicle is allowed to cross before buying, pre 85 humvee's ok but not later

Absolutely its worth it.  I bought one in May. I got is used off of Ebay, 2008 with only 10,000 miles on it and about $25,000 in extras.

I paid $48,000 US for it and at the time I moved Canadian over to USD at Par, almost the same as it is now.  I had my dealer bring it over for me and I leased it with them, so they changed the cluster in the dash for me for free.

Here is what the fees were.

1. Gas Guzzler $2000

2. Border Fee $220

3. Registration $225

4. RIV $300

5. Shipping $1500 (you can save this if you go and pick it up yourself, but the bill of sale has to be at the border 48 hours before you arrive, otherwise you sit and wait for 2 days)

6. Safety $125

7. Licensing $20

So add these onto the price and see where you net out.  I saved about $25,000 based on the vehicle I got with all the add ons.

Cheers

I did it back in 07 and it was very easy. A little bit of running around but easy as hell. All I had to pay was GST at canada Customs and PST when you get the plates. Call me if you would like more info.

I am about to pull the trigger on a purchase (2000 H1) but have some questions in regards to the Federal inspection... how particular are they about the modifications on the vehicle? What exactly are they looking for? If it can be subsequently put back into stock form (given a few days of wrenching), is that a workable plan? Anyone run into any issues with bringing in a modded truck?

The truck in question has a 2" BL, a bunch of performance mods (exhaust, rad, and then some), custom bumpers, racks, and then some. Let's just say that the CBSA comment about inadmissable vehicles needing to be exported / destroyed is causing me some concern.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
