Sichuan Tengzhong's Failed Bid For General Motors

Forbes editor Paul Maidment said in his weekly Notes on the News column earlier this year that Sichuan Tengzhong's failed bid for General Motors' Hummer brand is less about the inability of a Chinese company to take over a foreign brand and more about the precise kinds of ambitions Chinese government officials are now chasing. It was a good argument, one worth revisiting.
Maidment holds that Beijing was reluctant to put its stamp of approval on an acquisition deal for a company known for environmentally unfriendly megavehicles when it has made such a big deal about being green.
He also notes China is in the process of shifting emphasis from purchasing vast hordes of resources like ore and oil to targeting companies (or parts of companies) and technology that will form the groundwork for building reputable Chinese brands.
"Computer maker Lenovo, which bought IBM's laptop business, was an early example. In parallel we are also seeing a move to do what Japanese companies like Toyota, Nissan and Honda did three decades ago: investing overseas to produce for local markets," Maidment says in his March video, China's New Global M&A.
He concludes: "Hummer didn't fit the plan, but plenty of others will."

I still do not understand why some oil companies or large organizations don't get together and purchase this brand...I find it hard to believe that there isn't a market for these trucks..I also do not understand how a marketing company can not reclaim the drive and excitement for this brand. The "green" folks have been telling us that everything we do is bad..but industry is what built all our countries strong and the 50s and 60s were the eras of BIG vehicles, also HUMMER is not frowned on in other countries other then North America..and not in all places in North America are they frowned on. I am rambling a bit but it is due to my ongoing amazement that somehow, in this day and age, that a Brand with this much potential is being shut down. Gas Guzzling in not an excuse, I mean how many damn full size RVs, and huge pickup F350s and Ram 3500s are out there pulling boats and trailers everyday and been driven around sucking up and burning gas like there is no tomorrow, much more then HUMMERs, no one is shooting them, actually 1 in 12 Americans own a RV or 30'+ camper..that is higher ratios then Hummer owners..
All in all I am very sad about GM and I saw them on the news yesterday bragging about how they have repaid their debt..how they are making the work force strong and employees lots of folks.. they don;t talk about all the people that have had their lives destroyed by Shutting down the brands like Hummer.

You're completely right about everything. They're aren't too many vehicles out there that you can classify as truly unique but the H1 and H2 HUMMER I don't believe can be compared apples to apples with anything else on the market. Even though the H3 is upmarket compared to an FJ or Wrangler I'd argue they're similar enough in purpose and capability to be considered the same class of vehicle. If HUMMER continued to produce vehicles they may never be high volume, but the market is undeniably there.
In Calgary you see hundreds of people commuting in their gas guzzling pickups and SUVs, and I'd never fault anyone for doing so, but to somehow give HUMMER drivers the image of the environmental terrorist over these other drivers is so irrational, I can't even begin to put it into words it's so absurd. All I can do is shake my head!!!
Not to mention this new word 'green' is so ambiguous I can apply it to anything under the sun and in any context, to label some things as 'green' and some things as not is again so absurd I cannot even put it into words. The greenies have proven via their own actions that they are free to apply and revoke this label as they choose, ignoring vehicles with equal mileage but with orders of magnitude higher sales. I can say something is 'green' for some good karma with the sheeple but as a 'measure' of environmental responsibility it is meaningless!!! Lets see the PR people work on discrediting this worthless label and I think we'll get somewhere with HUMMER, because 'perception' of the matter is not reality in this case!

The biggest "green" and eco-friendly activists don't practise what they promote to us on their "green agenda". They continue to use big private jets and gas guzzling big limos to gather together on those big eco-summits! And after that they told us that Hummer Brand shouldn't been exist because it's not eco-friendly! Looks like a bullshit for kids in school! So where is the truth?

I posted sometime back that H3 Alpha's are now concidered green in Japan. Also in that article a Japanese official stated not everyone could use a Prius. Maybe Gm should roll Hummers into GMC instead of a separate brand. Already the H3 is more a GMC than an AMG.
