You should check out solar heating systems too, they are very efficient. and cost is resanable. they can also heat about 80%of your hot water needs a year.

I considered something like this on my house as well, but! I believe I read something, to paraphrase, that the utilities here in Alberta won't pay you for electricity you produce that goes back onto the grid.
Even if you could get your net consumption down to zero so you had no electricity bill (which impossible because of the maintenance fees and whatever that get charged regardless of your consumption) it takes just too long to pay for itself to make it worthwhile saving like $50/mth.
But let everyone know how it goes because I'm super interested to hear about it... It's such a great idea and if I find out I'm wrong about the rules in Alberta I'd be all over something like this.

Man I know what you mean, they kill you with the extra charges & fees; I have my energy bill here actually:
Energy Charge: $28.64
Administration Charge: $6.41
Distribution Charge: $11.26
Balancing Pool Allocation: $1.48
DAS Adjustment Rider: $1.26
Tans Access Defer Acct Rider: $1.12
Transmission Charge: $4.79
Local Access Fee: $4.32
Total: 56.32
Forget the power, I wish I could save on the fees!!
I should just go off the grid completely with one of these:
Natural Gas powered generator....
