Hey guys, I'm currently in the market shopping for a H1 but I have a few concerns.

IN my commute to work and back each day I put about 50 000kms on my vehicle annually, if I subject the H1 to this kind of millage will I be killed in maintenance costs?

My idea was also to convert it to bio diesel so I will save on fuel costs not sure if anyone has done that before.

Finally I'm finding a lot of H1 wagons for goof prices but not the pickup style which I'm looking for. Has anyone converted a wagon to the regular style?

I found mine here. http://www.hummermarketplace.com/index.php I don't think you will save much using Bio-Diesel.The price at the pump is the same or higher and I don't believe you get better mileage.If you are planning on using your own filtering system to make your own fuel,make sure you have someplace to test for contamination after filtering.Could cause you problems if it is not filtered properly.50000K's a year??? ouch, you will be killed by diesel costs... near 10k$...

I have an average of 19l/100km... do the math

A honda gets an av of 6l/100km... not the same feeling though..



If money isn't a factor, well go for the H1, but be sure to get a >= 1996 ... they hold 64L more fuel ... (95L main + 64L aux.) and 195L for the Alpha...

Mine holds 250 liters.2 aux tanks in the fender wells.1994

Get a Sierra, that's not a comparison to make especially with the mileage you do. I thought it was feasibly to drive my 2003 H1 as a daily driver when I first got it, but that is certainly not the case.. I have a BMW as a daily driver that costs me nothing in maintenance and very little in fuel.

My H1 has now become my daily driver.. I have no issue with that, a bit loud, need to look at a bit of sound proofing.. but I love it...

Yes. Average maintenance costs for an H1 daily driven, with the occasional off road trip will run $2,000-3,000.00 a year for service and replacing small stuff, wear on tires, replacing pitman/idler arms, etc.



The H1 and Humvee are boats, and you know what they say about boats. Bust out another thousand. If you are good with cars and like working and troubleshooting your own truck, and if you have the free time then you can save a bit of money.



I daily drive my truck but I only put about 20 miles a day on it [about 32km]. I put a few hundred on it when I go on a wheeling trip. I also run biodiesel, but it's not cheaper here, it's slightly more than regular diesel, I buy commercial Bio diesel, B99, B20 or B5 at the pump.



Veggie Oil [people get bio diesel and veggie confused] is another beast, and you will have maintenance headaches with it. The injection pumps and PMD's are a usual maintenance item on our trucks, and adding veggie oi to the mix adds another failure point to the system. You'll need extra filters, heated lines, and other modifications to run WVO or SVO in our trucks.



I would daily drive long miles in an h1 Alpha with the duramax and allison 1000 transmission. Quiet ride, better MPG, and you can run high speeds on the highway all day long.



A 6.2/6.5/turbo truck? You're pretty much stuck at 65mph / 103 kph for optimum highway fuel economy on a 6.5 turbo diesel, past that you'll drop from 15-mpg down to single digits as soon as you crest that point.



If you are buying a used truck, most people don't do the proper maintenance on h1's, and you almost always have to play catch up maintenance on a used truck if you aren't careful, you may have to put a few thousand dollars into it. I had to on mine. Another friend had to buy a new engine after buying a 97 truck in 2005 with only 3000 miles on the clock. 2 Weeks in, needed a new engine, $15,000.



I needed to spend about $4,000 on my H1 in the first 2-3 months of ownership. New transfer case, complete hvac rebuild, misc items.



I'd have a paid inspection done on any H1 I'd consider buying. Treat it like buying a Ferrari.



Pickups will be hard to find, they are the most rare hummer h1 variant aside from the factory slant back. Converting an H1 from one type to another type is extremely expensive, and many parts are out of production, especially interior pieces. It's also labor intensive.



I was surprised at the additional cost of H1 ownership, but it's manageable. I do a lot of the work myself when I can, and when I'm over my head on an issue, there's a local AM General tech near me who I can go to and I'm very lucky for that.



And to the new H1 owner, dealing with the 2 piece wheels and new tires is always a fun experience <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />, tire shops that know better will wave you off when you pull in and say "we don't do those, go to the truck stop or dealer".
