Pre 98 H1 Hvac

Post by dwaxman1 »

Ok the excitement starts.. I have a AC issue in my 96 wagon and I found out the there is a HVAC upgrade that happened on either late 97.5 or 98 and that the old model has nothing but trouble. well it seems I have the older model and now an upgrade is a bit expensive.. over 3K installed..I have heard there are some other things that can be done to assist with cooling the truck down as well as helping a bit with sound proofing too.

Has anyone installed RAMMAT or dynamat?? has it helped?? I have heard different opinions and I get a ton of road noise from my MTRs, a bit quieter would be nice, I know it will never be as quiet as my H2 but...

let me know what you think or know...currently I am using the old fashion AC, windows down, drive fast..

I have the old style AC in my truck and it is serviceable if you know what your doing!!

I have taken my whole front unit out and repaired it (nothing worked) and put it back in and it blows cold and hot now.

As for sound proofing there are some really good write ups here:

http://www.hummerknowledgebase.com/interior/sp.html

I am working right now on soundproofing under my hood of the Truck, which should help a bit as well. There is a lot that can be done for soundproofing (too much to write about!)

Also not sure were you live but if you need help with your ac unit you could always stop by my place, or I could meet you at my friends shop and help you out and show you what needs to be done.

No I have just done a few different things here and there. The majority of the sound comes from the engine and the metal body itself (sound vibrations bounce through the metal frame). So insulating the hood, the dog house, and any other parts of the front of the truck would be the first thing. Then you need to stop sound from vibrating through the metal frame of the truck. for this I am slowly spraying the floor in my truck with Truck bed liner (running out of money so I stress slowly! ha ha). This will first protect it from water and rust but furthermore help with the vibration of sound into the vehicle.

A good fairly cheap insulation is Duct liner (this is what I want to use under my hood), if you know anyone who works with home HVAC units they should be able to get you rolls of it. Duct Liner is a type of flexible foam sheet that is mold and mildew resistant, it can handle extreme heat, and also works as a great sound insulator.

We should meet up and go over soundproofing and also take a look at your HVAC unit.

From a sound perspective tires make a huge difference - my old Goodyear MTs were REALLY LOUD. I put on TrXus MTs and suddenly was able to hear the front passenger.

You guys seen this?

It's the AM General installation video of the upgrade kit for older hummers, if you are comfortable with doing that work in the video you can probably just get the kit [which comes with all the templates] and knock it out in a weekend, replace the dryer. then take it to a A/C shop for a recharge.

There was a few on ebay for $900-1000 and occasionally more pop up from time to time. Last time I saw one was a year ago though <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />.

Ya, thats a good idea as well, and its not that hard of a job. The only problem I was wondering about is how much gain would you get from this system after paying over $1000. I was able to fix mine for a couple hundred, of course its not pritty, but you cant see it so as long as it works I'm happy.

Hey Dwaxman1 if you still need help with the system let me know! If you could make it down to Brantford sometime I could have a look!
