Front Licence Plate Ontario

After being threatened with a ticket for illegal front plate mounting,I started to get really pissed off with our system.

I have been checking out the legalities of the mounting the front plate on my roof rack between the 2 outer, out of 4 equally spaced, offroad lamps. The rack sits about a foot back of the lamps. My question for you all is:

Under the HTA section 12+13 violations as to number plates, is this plate mounting illegal.??

(HTA--highway traffic act)

In other forums I found out that vertical mounting is legal.

Under section 13(2),"is plainly visible at all times.."

What does plainly mean??

Both 12 +13 leave out the part indicating front or back of the vehicle.

Any officers or lawyers want to play with this one?<img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='???' />

Just curious because no matter what,we are guilty until proven not guilty. So I am remounting plate to calm the officer down and keep the $125 in my pocket.

Can't help you on that one .... YET. I am going to ask a few OPP friends and a couple of lawyers as I am fighting the ticket I received this weekend at the Swift. The officer stated that the licence plate had to be firmly attached to the front bumper of the vehicle to be considered legal...we asked about placing it in the front windshield and he said NO. I'll keep you informed of my findings....

I can't even find the law where you must display two licence plates....I'll have to look again when I am more awake...

Ok, found it, but it is vague. Under the HTA Section 7(1)b(i) which states..."No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless, there are displayed on the vehicle, in the prescribed manner, number plates issued in accordance with the regulations showing the number of the permit issued for the vehicle."

Still nothing about placement or where it has to be affixed...or no further reference to the "in the precribed manner" and "in accordance with the regulations"

Still looking....oh, found out the cop who gave me a ticket is the Chapter President for the local Snowmobile Club and he does not like 4x4 vehicles using the trails, but cannot stop us...so I guess he has resorted to harrassing us with tickets....

The saga continues.....

The HTA itself makes no mention whatsoever of where the front 'number plate' as it is called therein has to be attached. There is a "Regulation", sort of an addendum to the Act, to wit R. R. O. 1990, Reg. 628, s. 9 (3), which states the plates "...shall be attached to and exposed in a conspicuous position in the front and rear of the motor vehicle."

Hmmm...wondering if there has been any changes as the officer stated it must be firmly attached to the front bumper...

I drove around for the past two years with no front plate on at all. While going through a ride program the OPP officer mentioned my lack of a front plate. He kindly reminded me to put it on said to be careful because the next officer who may notice might not be as cool as him <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... >/grin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';D' /> I put my plate on the next day. I guess my point is a friendly warning/reminder goes alot further than a ticket. In the end the problem was solved (plate was attached) and I have a slight amount of faith restored in the police.... at least there is one cop out there who's cool

My officer in question says the plate must be in the center of the vehicle .That would mean for me ,instead of being behind the outer two lamps, it would be be behind the middle two lamps!<img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... #>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='???' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... ey-013.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wtf:' /> <img src='http://www.canadianhummerclub.com/forum ... ey-013.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wtf:' />
