Been working on Changing out Bolts on our H1, with Markus' help of course...



So far have changed..

• bolts around the windshield
• bolts on door hinges
• side mirror bolts
• rear door handle bolts
• rear window bolts and interior rear door panels

going to work interior rear side windows and rear opera windows too..



changing them all to stainless steel with anti seize and hex heads...had to drill out a few already...will take photos when I return..



anyone else doing the same??

From what I've read, stainless steel bolts aren't as strong and durable as the standard AMG ones. There is a significant difference, and you would probably want to look into that. To prevent rust, your best bet are bolts from GR8 Hardware with Cadmium plating. You won't need anti-sieze with cadmium.



The critical ones are on the frame, so I wouldn't replace these with stainless at all. The others don't matter as much, but just be aware you won't get the same strength out of the new ones.



EDIT: And the reason why they use the odd looking bolt heads for the hinges is to deter easy access into the truck by criminals via simply unbolting the door. You may want to use bolts with a non-standard head if you want to replace them.

Interesting as I am following Phil's lead on this one....as for criminials unbolting the doors..well if they want it that bad to unbolt a door, then insurance will havea to cover the cost of a replacement one....

Stainless should be ok for trim, non critical bolts, I'd leave the door bolts as is, and replace with new AMG bolts.



There's nothing special about the hinge plate bolts, just 12 sides 1/4" bolts with a flange.I don't think anti-theft is any real consideration since a thief is just going to smash the glass or use a slim jim or unzip the soft top depending on the truck.



As for frame and structural bolts, you are ok with grade 8 CAD plated, Armor Coat or Dura/Durotech plated bolts. Don't touch any of those with stainless. I've seen a tv show where they replayed the frame bolts with ungraded pan head stainless bolts for a "clean look" and that has bad idea written all over it.



The windshield bolts are a bear, since they will rust, and you may risk breaking the nutserts on the lower trim pieces. I had to redo all of mine when I repainted the truck.

I have changed mine, also kept my old ones in case... I like my stainless ones now...again when I come home, I will show you some photos...

I think it's a "look" Mostly black trucks seem to do this. Derek.. I think all that time you spent at the mall in the past made your judgment cloudy... do some mods that matter offroad!!
